Fighting Breaks out in Northern Pakistan: Heavy Casualties Among Pakistani Troops and Pakistani Mujahideen

Pakistan Army Bulldozes Market of Pakistani Villagers

Pakistani newspapers are reporting heavy fighting between Pakistani troops and Islamic Pakistani tribesmen supporting the resistance to America. Heavy casualties are occurring on both sides.

The prestigious Urdu language daily Nawa-e-Waqt has reported the specific areas of the fighting which erupted early September 10 (Friday).

The Islamic tribes of the Ahmed Zai Wazir are mobilizing to attack the advancing Pakistani troops which have seized an important mountain hub in the Karoon Manja area of subdivision Luddha in Southern Waziristan. The Islamic fighters have set ablaze a Pakistani military convoy, killing a large number of pro-American troops. Hundreds of armed tribesmen are moving towards the Pakistani forces.

In the subdivision Wana, Pakistani troops and paramilitary forces cordoned off the Rustam market and bulldozed the entire complex belonging to the Awaz Khel, a sub-clan of the Ahmad Zai which supports Islamic resistance to pro-American forces. The Pakistan army has also closed down the transportation center in Mughal Khel. These two steps are meant to destroy the economy of the Islamic communities.

ALL KILLED in MUSHARRAF's AIR ATTACK were CIVILIANS

Mairajuddin, an elected representative of the Frontier people, said on September 10 that ALL the people killed in the air strike on September 9 were Pakistanis. He said that if the Musharraf government can produce even one "foreigner" killed in the two hour bombing by the PAF, he would be willing to have his own nose cut off. [The Musharraf government claimed that those killed were Chechens, Uzbeks and Arabs.]

[The number of people killed in the air strike by Musharraf's air force has now risen to above 100, all from the Mahsud tribe. A Pakistani mujahid leader known only as Abdullah told BBC that the tribes will fight back. He said our fight is not against Pakistan but against America. He added that 10 to 15 Americans are supervising the Pakistani attacks on the Islamic communities.]

9.11: It's time to give up Conspiracy theories and face the facts [Details on the Hijackers]

by Buut Shikan (Idol Breaker)

Middle class Muslims have built up a defense mechanism against the 9.11 attacks. In Egypt, Pakistan and the U.S. some Muslims like to claim that it was a 'Jewish conspiracy' or that perhaps the Bush government was behind it. The conspiracy theory was started by pro-Iran Al-Manar TV and gradually developed a life of its own.

The 9.11 Commission carried out a comprehensive investigaion. Many of its interpretations are way off the mark. The basic facts have, however, been pinned down with sufficient evidence to be acceptable. Muslims should read The 9/11 Commission Report [567 pages] if they missed the Commission hearings on TV.

The hijackers were caught on camera while boarding the planes they hijacked. During the hijackings, some of the passengers called on their cell phones. The hijackers too spoke a little. These voices were made available on TV.

The seats on the planes where the hijackers sat are now known. If you missed it on TV, read it in the printed Commission Report.

Some of the hijackers were stopped from boarding {"selected" by security] and then allowed to board because the security officials were looking for weapons and explosives. The methodology of the attack and the willingness of the hijackers to sacrifice themselves made the attacks deadly and successful with consequences which have changed the world.

One passenger on American Airlines flight 11, Daniel Lewin (who had "served four years in the Israeli military," p. 5) tried to stop the hijackers but was stabbed. Passengers on other flights thought they were undergoing a "traditional" hijacking and had no idea what was going to happen.

Only on United Flight 93, the passengers realized what was going to happen. They fought the hijackers and the plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Its target was the White House. It fell short by 20 minutes. The plane had left 25 minutes late and by the time it was hijacked, the Twin Towers had been struck.

On American Airlines Flight 11, the Egyptian Mohammed Atta was in seat 8D (business class). When he took over the plane, he tried to keep the passengers calm. One of the statements he made is now well known: "we have some planes. Just stay quiet, and you'll be okay. We are returning to the airport." (p.19)

When American Air flight 77 ploughed into the Pentagon, it had throttled to maximum power and was going at 530 miles per hour.

The most dramatic evidence of hijacking came from United flight 93. When the passengers rushed the cockpit, Ziad Jarrah flipped the plane two and fro to destabilize the passengers. [Jarrah was the reluctant hijacker who lived an unIslamic lifestyle, even had a girl friend, and decided to clean himself up by doing the most important attack in recent human history.]

Here is what the report says, based on the clear information from the plane recorder on United 93 which was headed for the White House:

'The recorder captured the sounds of loud thumps, crashes, shouts, and breaking glasses and plates. At 10:00:03, jarrah stabilized the airplane. Five seconds later, Jarrah asked, "Is that it? Shall we finish it off." The sounds of fighting continued outside the cockpit. Again, Jarrah pitched the nose of the aircraft up and down. At 10:00:26, a passenger in the background said, "In the cockpit. If we don't we'll die!" Sixteen seconds later, a passenger yelled, "Roll it!" Jarrah stopped the violent maneuvers at about 10:01:00 and said, "Allah is the greatest! Allah is the greatest!" He then asked another hijacker in the cockpit, 'Is that it. I mean, shall we put it down?' to which the other replied, "Yes, put it in it, and pull it down."

'The passengers continued their assault and at 10:02:23, a hijacker said, "Pull it down! Pull it down!" The hijackers remained at the controls but must have judged that the passengers were only seconds fron overwhelming them. The airplane headed down; the control wheel was turned hard to the right. The airplane rolled on to its back, and one of the hijackers began shouting "Allah is the greatest. Allah is the greatest." With the sounds of the passenger counterattack continuing, the aircraft plowed into an empty field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 580 miles per hour, almost 20 minutes' flying time from Washington, D.C.'

'Jarrah's objective was to crash his airliner into symbols of the American Republic, the Capitol or the White house. He was defeated by the alerted, unarmed passengers of United 93.' [p. 14. The words of the passengers in English and of the hijackers in Arabic are clear on the FDR and CVR systems of the plane.]

What happened after 9.11 and how the crisis was handled by the United States cannot be properly discussed until the Muslim world is willing to face the basic facts of 9.11. Conspiracy theories come from people who cannot face reality and are mentally defeated.

Zimbabwe convicts UK mercenary

The high profile case relates to a coup plot in Equatorial Guinea

A Zimbabwean court has convicted a former British SAS officer of dealing in illegal firearms in connection with a coup plot in Equatorial Guinea.

Simon Mann and 69 others - all travelling on South African passports - were arrested in Harare on 7 March, allegedly on their way to stage the coup.

Another 15 foreigners, including eight South Africans, were detained on similar charges in Malabo, the capital of the Central African nation.

Sentencing is due to begin on 10 September.

An alleged desperate written appeal for help that Mann managed to smuggle out of his high-security prison in Zimbabwe drew attention to Mark Thatcher, the son of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

Thatcher was arrested in Cape Town on Wednesday and charged with bankrolling the alleged putsch.

His arrest is shining a spotlight on powerful members of the British elite who may have colluded to take over the oil-rich African country.

Other names from rarefied circles have been linked to the conspiracy, including disgraced writer Lord Jeffrey Archer, London-based businessman Ely Cahlil and millionaire David Hart, who is said to be close to Lady Thatcher.

Charge denied

Mark Thatcher, 51, has denied the charge of putting up $275,000 to fund the coup attempt against Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema.

Since 1979, Nguema has been at the helm of the country where huge oil reserves were discovered recently, attracting the attention of several foreign firms and governments.

Mark Thatcher's friendship with Mann, one of the alleged masterminds, who was also educated in private British schools and the scion of a Watney brewing empire, highlighted the "old boy" network of the alleged soldiers of fortune and their patrons.

Mann's letter, replete with public-school jargon, said all those involved including "Scratcher" - a presumed reference to Thatcher - should pitch in and help, according to media reports.

Mann reportedly said bribes could settle the affair, evoking the possible need for a "large splodge of wonga", adding: "Now it's bad times and everyone has to pull their ... weight."

Mann and Nick du Toit, a South African on trial as a co-conspirator in Equatorial Guinea, set up Executive Outcomes, which operated from Pretoria in South Africa and helped the Angolan government protect its oil installations from rebels during the war.

No special treatment

South Africa's This Day daily, in a cutting editorial on Thursday, highlighted the privileged backgrounds of the alleged key players, describing Thatcher as an "old Harrovian" and Mann as an "old Etonian well connected to the Conservative party".

It pointed out that while mercenaries had a "long and dishonourable history of plying their trade in Africa ... a particular kind ... the colonially-minded British expat has come to typify this species".

A spokesman for South Africa's elite Scorpions investigating unit, Makhosini Nkosi, has said Thatcher will not be accorded any special privileges despite being the offspring of the formidable "Iron Lady".

"Mr Thatcher is an ordinary resident of South Africa. He is not royalty nor is he an ex-head of state," he said.

Rebel cleric killed says Yemen

Friday 10 September 2004, 15:45 Makka Time, 12:45 GMT

Al-Huthi is accused of staging anti-US and Israel protests

Yemeni forces say they have killed opposition cleric Husain al-Huthi and tens of his supporters.

Officials said on Friday that his death marks the end of a series of clashes over several months that have left over 200 rebels and troops dead.

"We can confirm that al-Huthi and tens of his supporters were killed today in morning fighting," the official said. "This is the end of the rebellion," said one official.

Another government source told Aljazeera that al-Huthi's body had been found after clashes with government forces.

The government accused al-Huthi, leader of the "Believing Youth" group and the Zaidi sub-sect of Shia Islam, of setting up unlicenced religious centres and of forming an armed group which has staged violent protests against the United States and Israel.

Yemen had offered a $54,000 reward for al-Huthi's capture and in June, security forces launched an operation to capture him in the mountainous Saada province, some 240 km north of the capital Sanaa.

Killed in fighting

Some of the rebel preacher's supporters were also killed while others surrendered, a joint statement from the defence and interior ministries said.

A defence ministry official said that al-Huthi had been hiding out with supporters in Jarf Salman, a village in the rugged mountains of Maran, which lies in Saada, and was killed during the culmination of three days of intense fighting.

Jarf Salman had been under siege since late August as the army closed in on al-Huthi and his armed supporters.

Witnesses in the area told news agencies that clashes continued until late on Thursday between those holed up with Razami and the army.

Military sources said they expect Razami to be arrested within days.

Hundreds killed

Yemen had been battling the cleric and his supporters since 18 June when the rebellion erupted, since leaving more than 400 people dead on both sides.

Hundreds of al-Huthi's estimated 3,000 supporters have also been detained.

The official statement said a ministerial committee is to be formed at the behest of President Ali Abd Allah Salah to assess the damage to the region after months of deadly clashes, and to rebuild those areas destroyed.

The scores of people that fled their homes during the unrest have also been urged to return and resume life as normal.

'Scapegoat'

Al-Huthi told AFP in July that the conflict was a result of his anti-US stand and accused Salah of seeking "to please the United States at the expense of his own people."

"I am working for the propagation of the Quran and the fight against the United States and Israel," al-Huthi had said, rejecting government claims he was linked to foreign forces.

The self-styled "Amir al-Muminin," or Prince of Believers, headed the Faithful Youth organisation, an offshoot of the Islamist opposition movement Al-Haq formed in 1992.

Born in 1956 in Saada province and the son of one of the most influential Zaidi religious officials in Yemen, al-Huthi served as an MP in Yemen's parliament from 1993 to 1997.
