The story is set in Harlem and Greenwich, New York, with parts of it occurring in France.
It begins with the breakup of a family. The wife, Leonia, flees from the West coast to New York. There she meets Rufus, the symbolic central figure of the story. Rufus is Black and she is White.
So, it becomes a story about racism in America. Like her previous husband, Rufus, too, mistreats her. He beats her, but she sees him as a protector.
After Rufus dies, the story revolves around his funeral. The overarching message is that Christianity as a fake religion. Further, the story gives the impression that marriages in America involve hypocrisy.
Nearly all the characters in the story keep drinking throughout the book. Ida, Rufus' sister, seems to be the only decent character. And, she is the only one who cooks real food.
The overall message Baldwin tries to convey is that homosexuality is strong in this country, and that homosexuals are much more authentic in their attachment to their partners than heterosexuals. The story tries to explain that homosexuals are very sincere, but that heterosexuals are not.
What to a Pakistani is the Fourteenth of August?
By Nadrat Siddique
August 14, 2026 – On this, Pakistan's Independence Day, I, a proud Pakistani, reflect on the actions—official and unofficial—taken by the nation birthed for Islam. These are often times inspiring, heart-warming, and awe-inspiring. At other times they are bizarre, conflicted, disappointing, shocking, even revolting.
In the 1947 founding of Pakistan, an event often termed as "Partition," vast numbers of Muslims migrated from India to Pakistan to avoid having to live under racist, classist, repressive, caste-based, polytheist rule. Scores of violent deaths (estimate: 200,000 – 2 million) occurred during the process. An even larger number (estimate: 12 million – 20 million) became refugees, often leaving homes which had been in their families for generations. Many, including my progenitors, lost everything they had.
The world renowned poet Allamah Muhammad Iqbal, whose stunning work had laid out a vision for Pakistan about a decade prior, was honored posthumously as the Poet-of-the-Nation by Pakistan's new government. A planned city, Islamabad, was constructed in 1960 to serve as the new capital.
To me, here are some of the more memorable moments of pride in Pakistan (undoubtedly there are many more):
The Pakistani masses filling the streets of every major Pakistani city during the Iraq War, protesting the US pounding of that Muslim nation.
Abdul Sattar Edhi and his Edhi Foundation coming forth to assist the people of Azad Jamu and Kashmir after the October 2005 earthquake there, when the Pakistan government under Pervez Musharraf didn't (or not in timely fashion). That earthquake, in which 73,000 - 87,00 people died, was considered the worst in Pakistan's history in terms of lives lost.
Abdul Qadir Khan responding to India's "Smiling Buddha" nuclear program by pushing forward programs for Pakistan's nuclear development. He was called in for questioning by the Musharraf regime in 2004 at the behest of the George W. Bush administration. Khan was placed under house arrest for about five years, but filed a law suit challenging the arrest. His attitude seemed to be: If other nations, including the U.S., India, and Israel had nuclear capability, then it was Pakistan's right to do so as well. (Nota bene: The US is the only nation which has dropped an atomic bomb on another nation, mass murdering millions.)
President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq permitting millions of Afghan refugees to shelter in Pakistan, in keeping with the Islamic principle of ansars helping muhajirs (refugees). This continued throughout much of the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan. Despite major pilfering of international aid monies by corrupt Pakistani officials, and severe harassment of the refugees by local police in Pakistan's frontier areas, the shelter provided by President Zia gave the Afghans a base from which to fight back against the Soviets.
Najeeb Ahmed, the former President of the Karachi Press Club, bravely revealing the results of his years long investigation into the disappearance of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui at a 2009 public rally. There, he stated that Dr. Aafia had been captured by Pakistani forces and turned over to the FBI. He was one of the first Pakistani journalists investigating Aafia's disappearance. (Here it is important to keep in mind that for the first five years of her detention, both the US and Pakistani authorities denied they had her in custody). The day after Ahmed spoke at the rally, he was found dead, reportedly of sudden heart failure. The files containing the results of his investigation remain missing to this day.
Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui, a Harvard University-educated epileptologist and sister to political prisoner Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, refusing to buckle to repeated death threats delivered to her Karachi home, as she tried diligently to determine the whereabouts of her disappeared sister. (Aafia was completely unaccounted for, unlawfully detained and tortured in US government "black sites" for five years before her detention was confirmed by the authorities.) Far from being cowed down, Fowzia founded the Aafia Movement, an organization which sought not only to bring back her sister, but became a national force for social justice across Pakistan.
Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui was also instrumental in retrieving—with great difficulty—Dr. Aafia's underage children, Ahmad and Mariam, who had been kidnapped along with their mother but detained separately (in violation of international law). These children were finally brought home in 2010, after being unlawfully detained for about seven years (since 2003).
Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui bravely entering FMC Carswell in 2023, finally permitted to visit her political prisoner sister for the first time in 20 years. She was dreading the condition she'd likely find her sister in. FMC Carswell, the subject of hundreds of complaints of sexual violence, has been dubbed the "Rape Camp" by prison rights advocates. The visit was made even more traumatic by the shenanigans of prison authorities, who initially claimed the key to the inmate visitation room had been lost, delaying Dr. Fowzia's visit by an entire day. (She'd come from Pakistan for the purpose.)
Former Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan visiting Dr. Aafia Siddiqui in FMC Carswell, a maximum-security prison in the very red state of Texas. He is one of very few Pakistani legislators or former legislators, to step foot in a US prison.
Former Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan joining the Freedom Flotilla seeking to break the illegal siege of Gaza by "Israel," knowing he would likely be intercepted and arrested by Israel. Despite being tortured by Israel, he emerged undaunted, speaking out more vociferously than ever for a free Palestine.
Moazzam Begg, a British Pakistani formerly held at Guantanamo Bay, refusing to be destroyed by the torture he endured there. He was handed over to US authorities by the Musharraf regime in 2002. Far from becoming demoralized, he sued the British government for complicity in his detention, courageously and articulately speaking up about the horrors visited upon him at Gitmo. He went on to write a book called Enemy Combatant. Additionally, he founded "Cage Prisoners," later renamed "CAGE," a UK-based organization which advocates for the freedom of Guantanamo prisoners.
Amina Masood Janjua, the wife of Pakistani businessman Masood Ahmed Janjua, trying relentlessly to locate her disappeared husband. Despite the high probability that he would not be recovered alive, she refused to give up, and instead founded the Defense of Human Rights Pakistan (DHR) which seeks the release of all victims of enforced disappearance and fights for civil liberties. Since its inception, DHR has instrumented the release of hundreds of disappeared persons. ("Enforced disappearance," or extrajudicial kidnapping, frequently of government opponents or marginalized groups like the Baluch, is a serious issue in Pakistan.)
Dr. Rehiana Ali, sister of Farooq Ali Khan, ardently fighting to bring Farooq's killers to justice. Farooq, a British Kashmiri who loved both Pakistan and Kashmir, and planned to resettle there after he completed his PhD in the UK, was killed in a Ramada hotel in Islamabad in 2022. Dr. Rehiana, who holds both a medical degree and a PhD from top British universities, says she will not stop until the killers are brought to justice. She believes there was collusion between the Pakistan authorities and the UK government. Dr. Rehiana also ran for office in the 2024 UK General Election, receiving significant flack for her openly pro-Palestine stance. She shares her brother's love for Kashmir.
Umm Hassan, of Jamia Hafsa (women's Islamic seminary located in Islamabad) refusing to surrender to Pakistani forces even after her husband Abdul Aziz Ghazi had been captured, and her son subsequently killed. Jamia Hafsa, along with the Red Mosque, was conducting actions around Islamabad in protest of the demolition of numerous mosques in the capital city by the Pakistan government.
Altaf Shakoor of the Pasban Party, along with throngs of Pakistanis marching through the streets of Karachi, Lahore, and other major Pakistani cities in support of Palestine post-October 7. Most of them refused to back down in the face of the Pakistani police's threats to arrest them.
Jamaat e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman and the Jamaat e-Islami organizing the "Gaza Million March" in December 2024, followed by additional mass actions in support of Palestine throughout 2025. The Jamaat e-Islami chief has categorized the US as "the world's biggest terrorist." He categorically rejected Trump's Gaza Peace Plan, and openly criticized Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for supporting it. He insisted that any such negotiations had to include Hamas.
Bushra Bibi Khan, Imran Khan's outspoken wife leading a mass march in Islamabad in November 2024. Decked out in niqab and calling for his freedom, she refused to back down despite threats from the Shehbaz Sharif regime to arrest the protestors.
Aleema Khan, Noreen Khan and Dr Uzma Khan, Imran Khan's sisters, staging sit-ins on multiple occasions outside of Adiala Prison when authorities refused to allow them to meet their brother. On at least one of these occasions, security at the jail was tightened, additional police contingents were brought in, water cannons were stationed nearby, and barricades erected at multiple entry points. Still the Khan sisters did not relent.
Moments of revulsion:
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, literally selling innocent Pakistanis like Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, the Rabbani brothers, and Moazzam Begg for chump change to the Americans during the War on Terror. Musharraf similarly turned in Sofiane Berhoumi and other innocent Arabs who were living in, or visiting Pakistan. Most of these were then taken to Guantanamo to be tortured by US forces.
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif meeting with Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui in 2013, as she tried once again to secure the Pakistan government's assistance in securing her sister Aafia's release. The Prime Minister promised Dr. Fowzia that he would help her in every possible way—and then did exactly nothing.
Multiple Pakistani governments allowing their airspace to be used by the US to bomb Afghanistan during the US assault on that impoverished nation.
The Musharraf regime turning in Abdul Salam Zaeef, an Afghan diplomat based in Islamabad at the time to the Americans. Zaeef was then taken to Guantanamo and tortured.
The Pakistan military bombing hundreds of schools across the Pakistani frontier area (previously called North West Frontier Province and now known as Pakhtunkhwa) because they were too Islamic.
Imran Khan campaigning on a promise to bring Dr. Aafia Siddiqui home—and then ignoring her upon his election. And—as karmic law would have it—Khan later became a political prisoner himself.
Diplomats from the Pakistan Consulate in Houston visiting Dr. Aafia Siddiqui at FMC Carswell (prison where she is held), and—despite bringing out reports of her mistreatment—
doing nothing to help her.
Diplomats from the Pakistan Consulate in Houston actively discouraging Aafia supporters not to hold a 2018 protest across from the Consulate. Anywhere else but here, they said!
Pakistani President Shehbaz Sharif addressing the UN at length in September 2024, including on Palestine, Kashmir, and climate change—and not uttering a peep to free Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, often described as the "Daughter of the Nation." And he had the gall to invoke Qaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah at the start of his address!
Pakistan President Shehbaz Sharif (Nawaz Sharif's son) lying outright to Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui that he'd given a letter of support to Biden's office of pardons supporting Dr. Aafia's release on humanitarian grounds. (This was just before Biden left office, when the time was ripe for such a release to materialize). And then officials from the Biden administration told Dr. Fowzia that no such letter was ever received. Like father like son!
And finally, the most emetic: Shehbaz Sharif repeatedly nominating genocide co-architect Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, even as the US provided arsenal continued to rain death and terror on Palestinian men, women, and children.

Humanity in Search of Peace, Security, and Global Order in World
By Dr Mahboob A Khawaja
Global Leaders and Political Wickedness
Every day is fast becoming a killing day as if there is no morally conscientious humanity, no responsible leaders and no legitimate systems of political governance accountable for wrong actions.
Evil and insanity are not imaginary but real and happening across the globe, be it Gaza, West Bank Palestine, Lebanon, Ukraine-Russia unwarranted war and must be stopped to protect innocent human lives.
The US administration supports bombardments of civilian in south Lebanon, occupation of Palestine, crimes against humanity and Israeli genocide. Do the Arab leaders have deafening minds, eyes and ears?
All global institutions of peace , security and conflict resolution appear broken and sidelined by egomaniac politicians. Mankind feels helpless as its freedom and future is at stake.
The increasing impacts of the US-Iran war depict an insecure Arab Middle East without public institutions and responsible leadership.
Daily bombardments, forced displacements of Palestinians affirm the planned operation and working of Greater Israel with American supplied weapons and complicity.
Shamefully, Arab-Muslim leaders failed to protect their people and culture from Western instigated aggression. Comparative analysis often unfolds hidden truths about human nature and its wickedness.
Are there any global leaders of human conscience to extend security and protection of life to the masses of Gaza? There is a vital issue of ethnicity and Arabs were and remained colonized by the Western world.
Are there any international organizations to help avert the catastrophic bloodbath in progress across Gaza and the occupied West Bank?
Were the Geneva Conventions and International Humanitarian Laws just paper-based , dry inked narratives without any power to serve the cause of humanity?
How come the Arab-Muslim leaders are nowhere to be seen on this planet to defend the cause of Faith and protect Palestinians from Israeli-American sponsored war of extermination?
The Earth (A LIVING ENTITY) being bombed is the earth given to mankind by God as a "TRUST." DO YOU NOT SEE IT FLOATING IN SPACE JUST BY THE COMMAND OF GOD? WHEREVER THERE IS A TRUST, THERE MUST BE ACCOUNTABILITY. When evil-mongers and wrong-doers violate the sanctity of the Laws of God, they are held accountable – history tells without any prejudice. This author has walked through the ancient graveyards of so many nations used to claim being the "most powerful "on this earth – dead bones and silent forever and nothing else. The succeeding generations CURSE them for their crimes against humanity. THE GLOBAL INSTITUTIONS APPEAR BROKEN AND DYSFUNCTIONAL TO STOP THE INSANITY. If you don't believe in the encompassing truth, just view the real "genocide pictures" presented by Editor Rosa on Transcend Media, September 8, 2025:
Transcend.org/tms/2025/09/genocide-in-pictures-worth-a-trillion-words-66
Are the American – Israeli Leaders above International Laws and Accountability?
The besieged 2.5 million people of Gaza by Israeli forces blocking food, fuel, water, medicine and bombed hospitals portray clear pictures of tormenting pains, horrors and massive devastation planned and carried out as the global community witnesses in deaf silence as if the masses of Gaza are not normal human beings.
The world is not infinite but subject to time and destiny.
God, The All Knowing and Merciful has defined the roles and responsibilities of its creations.
Would the Western nations hold Israeli PM Netanyahu and President Trump accountable for their insanity against the people of Palestine?
The women and children of Gaza cry out loud asking for humanitarian help if there are any Arab, Muslim or Western leaders to rescue them from extreme deprivation, starvation and planned extermination.
Their cries end-up in deaf silence as no Western, Arab or Muslim leaders respond to their pains and horrors inflicted daily by the Israeli forces. Remember!
Those challenging the Laws of God are chastised by the Laws of God without exception. Are they waiting to meet the same end as did Pharaoh at the Red Sea?
The Egyptians, Qataris, the UAE's and Saudis and others carry no strength or political value in global context and appear morally, intellectually and politically bankrupt as a scum floating on a torrent of naive puppets and discredited leaders.

Israel so far, has dropped more than 70,000 ton of bombs on Gaza- more insane than what happened at Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War 2. The earth is living and spins at 1670 km per hour and orbits the Sun at 107,000 km per hour. Imagine, if this spinning fails, what consequences could occur to the living beings on Earth. Think again, about the average distance of earth from the moon is 238,855 miles (384,400 km), equivalent to 0.002572 Astronomical Units. Earth is a "trust" to mankind for its existence, sustenance of life, survival, progress and future-making. The Earth exists and floats without any pillars in a capsule by the Will of God, so, "Fear God Who created life and death." Is human intelligence still intact to understand this reality? Wherever there is trust, there is accountability. All human beings are accountable for their actions. The Divine warning (The Quran: 7: 56), warns:
Do no mischief on the Earth after it hath been set in order, but call on God with fear and longing in hearts; For the Mercy of God is always near to those who do good.
The Divine Message (Quran:40:64), clarifies:
It is God Who made for you the Earth as a resting place and the sky as a canopy; And has given you shape and made your shapes beautiful, and has provided for your Sustenance, of things pure and good; Such is God your Lord. So Glory to God, The Lord of the Worlds.
The Jewish people (progeny of Jacob), followers of Moses were warned and prohibited of killing of innocent people as enshrined in the Ten Commandments (Torah):
'Thou shalt not kill' (Exod. 20:13; also Deut. 5:17). Jewish law views the shedding of innocent blood very seriously, and lists murder as one of three sins (along with idolatry and sexual immorality), that fall under the category of yehareg ve'al ya'avor – meaning "One should let himself be killed rather than violate it.

Proposed Law Will Protect Online Buyers
Some ecommerce websites have been engaging in an ugly practice: surveillance pricing.
I have experienced seeing different prices for the same item. I may see different prices for the same item while browsing online, but when I click on the website link, I may see a different price than the one I saw on the search results page.
Surveillance pricing is solely based on an individual shopper's personal data such as browsing history, location, device type, and purchase history. Two different shoppers at the same website will see two different prices for the same item.
In June 2026, the New York State Legislature passed the One Fair Price Act, which was meant to ban Surveillance Pricing. However, Governor Hochul has not signed the bill yet. Industry lobbyists hope the bill is amended before it is signed into law. Businesses feel the law needs more clarity.
In a letter to the governor, who is campaigning for re-election, these business groups requested that the proposed law distinguish between 'dynamic pricing' and 'surveillance pricing.' Dynamic pricing is rooted in capitalism and changes prices based on supply and demand and timing (seasons). Business leaders also want loyalty and discount programs exempt from the One Fair Price Act.

Two Men Declare for 2027 WNBA Draft
In a February 2026 interview, WNBA player Sophie Cunningham was asked about transgender women playing in the WNBA. Her response criticizing transgender women in the locker room drew a lot of criticism from the LGBTQ+ community and their straight allies.
Sophie Cunningham, who identifies as Christian, has become a favorable iconic symbol for the Make America Great Again (MAGA) sector. Recently, Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeves wore a t-shirt that read: "Trans Kids Belong," at a recent game against the Indian Fever, Sophie Cunningham's team.
However, the Seattle Storm basketball team co-owner, Celeste Keaton, was recently suspended for 5 home games when she directed abusive language toward two teenage girls holding signs displaying support for Sophie Cunningham.
Now, two former NBA players, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, have declared for the WNBA 2027 draft as women!
Royce White identifies as a trans woman who is a lesbian. However, Enes Kanter Freedom is of Turkish descent and an avowed follower of Gulen. Years ago, he claimed that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan was out to get him. His father, Mehmet, had difficulty making a living in Turkey because of Enes' criticism of the Turkish government.
Despite Enes Freedom's criticism of China's oppression of the Uighur Muslims and going after LeBron James for turning a blind eye to it, Enes is a known huge supporter of Israel. It was this rebel rousing that got him kicked out of the NBA, although he was still a great scorer and rebounder.
Now, Enes Freedom wants to resurrect his career by joining the WNBA. Unfortunately, the WNBA has been welcoming transgender women, although none have ever played in the league. The WNBA bylaws do not prevent Royce White or Enes Freedom from joining the WNBA.
The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and the Olympic committee have banned biological men from competing in women's sports. Many people view Royce White and Enes Freedom's declaring for the WNBA draft as a joke, but it looks like nothing is stopping them from doing it.
Along with male chauvinists, the queer community often targets straight women for exploitation. Many women lack confidence and suffer from low self-esteem. The media is one of the key contributors to low self-esteem in women.
