One Woman's Witness affirmed by Allah & his Messenger.
Slander by Munafiqueen.
A Sect turned a Part of this into a Story of the Qur'an
verses eaten by a Goat
"'Ali ibn Abi Talib said: O messenger of Allah! Allah has
not put restrictions on you, and there are many women other
than she; yet you may ask the young woman (Barera) and she
will tell you the truth. On that the messenger of Allah,
peace and blessing of Allah be on him, called Barera and
asked her: 'O Barera! Did you ever see anything which raised
your suspicion? Barera said: No. By Allah who has sent you
with the Truth, I have never seen anything wrong in her
except that she is young and sometimes sleeps after having
kneaded the dough and the goat comes and eats it. On that
day the messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be
on him, stood up to give the khutba and asked the people to
support him against Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. The
messenger of Allah said: Who will support me against that
person who has hurt me in the matter of my family? By Allah
I know nothing but good about my family, and they have
accused a man about whom I know nothing except good and he
never entered my house except in my company."
[Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 3. Section 17. On Witnessing.]
Comment by Kaukab Siddique: Even the best women can be
slandered. When Ayesha, r.a. was slandered by the hypocrites
of Madina, the slander began to be accepted even by Muslims.
It's part of the male dominant attitudes in an oppressive
society. Islam struck a serious blow at men who slander
women.
Here we have Ali, r.a., calling for ONE WOMAN's witness [but
also expressing his cultural, male dominant attitude]. The
Prophet, pbuh, accepted ONE WOMAN's witness in this most
sensitive issue which was about to destroy the community.
Many Muslims accept a verse in Sura Baqarah to mean that two
women are required as witnesses in all matters.
However this authentic hadith indicates that both the
Prophet, pbuh, and Ali, r.a., accepted ONE WOMAN as witness.
The witnessing was sealed by Allah Almighty forever:
The Qur'an Chapter 24. [The words in brackets have been
added by the translator from tafseer. They are correct.]
Verily! Those who brought forth the slander (against
'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) the wife of the
Prophet ) are a group among you. Consider it not a bad thing
for you. Nay, it is good for you. Unto every man among them
will be paid that which he had earned of the sin, and as for
him among them who had the greater share therein, his will
be a great torment.
Why then, did not the believers, men and women, when you
heard it (the slander) think good of their own people and
say: "This (charge) is an obvious lie?"
Why did they not produce four witnesses? Since they (the
slanderers) have not produced witnesses! Then with Allah
they are the liars.
Had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy
unto you in this world and in the Hereafter, a great torment
would have touched you for that whereof you had spoken.
When you were propagating it with your tongues, and
uttering with your mouths that whereof you had no knowledge,
you counted it a little thing, while with Allah it was very
great.
And why did you not, when you heard it, say? "It is not
right for us to speak of this. Glory be to You (O Allah)
this is a great lie."
Allah forbids you from it and warns you not to repeat
the like of it forever, if you are believers.
And Allah makes the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses,
lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) plain to you, and Allah
is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Verily, those who like that (the crime of) illegal
sexual intercourse should be propagated among those who
believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and
in the Hereafter. And Allah knows and you know not.
And had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy
on you, (Allah would have hastened the punishment upon you).
And that Allah is full of kindness, Most Merciful.
O you who believe! Follow not the footsteps of Shaitan
(Satan). And whosoever follows the footsteps of Shaitan
(Satan), then, verily he commands Al-Fahsha' [i.e. to commit
indecency (illegal sexual intercourse, etc.)], and Al-Munkar
[disbelief and polytheism (i.e. to do evil and wicked deeds;
to speak or to do what is forbidden in Islam, etc.)]. And
had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy on you,
not one of you would ever have been pure from sins. But
Allah purifies (guides to Islam) whom He wills, and Allah is
All-Hearer, All-Knower.

International Campaign for Sunni Prisoners in Iran.
The International Campaign for Sunni Prisoners in Iran was
set up in 2013 in order to raise awareness about Sunni
prisoners of conscience in Iran.
We aim to translate, report and publish news and information
about the persecution suffered by Sunni Muslims in Iran,
focusing on those who have been unjustly imprisoned due to
spreading the teachings of Sunni Islam.
We are run by a small team of volunteers, and we are not
affiliated with any groups, governments or organizations.
**The situation of Sunni Muslims in Iran**
Sunni Muslims are a religious minority in the Shia-majority
Iran, facing discrimination ranging from restrictions on
worship to the harassment and intimidation of Sunni leaders
by intelligence and security services.
Numerous Sunni clerics, preachers and activists have been
imprisoned and even executed in Iran, often following unfair
trials based on 'confessions' obtained through torture. The
Iranian regime commonly falsely accuses Sunni preachers of
'enmity against God', in an attempt to justify their
imprisonment and execution.
There are currently more than 30 Sunni prisoners of
conscience awaiting execution in Iran.
**Our work**
Our vision is to see an end to the unfair detention and
execution of Sunni preachers and activists in Iran, and for
Sunni Muslims to be given the right to practice and promote
their religion freely.
We aim to work towards this becoming a reality through:
Education:
Raising awareness:
We aim to educate the public about the persecution and
detention faced by those who actively spread Sunni Islam
within Iran, by publishing news and information about the
arbitrary detention, torture and execution of Sunni
prisoners of conscience. Keeping these issues in the
public's awareness is an effective way of increasing the
pressure on the Iranian authorities, sending a powerful
message that the world is watching their actions.
Presenting the full picture:
We aim to provide the world with a clear and factual view of
the situation of Sunni prisoners in Iran, by publishing the
hidden side of the story, counteracting the biased reports
published by the state-run Iranian media.
Giving a voice to the prisoners:
By publishing the profiles, letters and statements from the
Sunni prisoners, we provide a platform for them to broadcast
their stories from their own perspective, and to break the
stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding their cases.
Campaigns
We aim to co-ordinate campaigns to raise awareness and lobby
the Iranian authorities through letters and petitions.
Please subscribe to stay updated about our latest campaigns.
**How you can help**
Your support is vital in working to save Sunni prisoners of
conscience from imprisonment, torture and execution in Iran.
Raising awareness
Raising awareness is an easy, yet highly effective, step
that each of us can take to help Sunni prisoners in Iran. By
taking just a few minutes to share each article you read,
you can help the information reach a much wider audience.

Islamic State at the door of Damascus. Hizbullah Offensive
on Aleppo Stalls
Jet shot down.
[SOHR and Reuters.]
April 17. United Nations is warning of severe shortages in
Yarmouk refugee camp on the doors of Damascus. Close reading
shows [as admitted by wire services] Islamic State fighters
have taken over almost ALL of Yarmouk refugee camp owing to
support of IS by Palestinians.
The eastern end of Yarmouk is controlled by al-Nusra which
is clashing with IS to control this key entry point into
Damascus.
Regime tanks are blocking the entrance into Yarmouk and
strictly stopping all food supplies into the camp. Desperate
appeals for food are coming out from civilians in the camp
but Assad is relentless in his control of the food supplies.
The Palestinian Authority of Abbas is with Assad and
blocking food supplies.
Meanwhile, after 7 days of fighting, it is apparent that the
Hizbullah's advance towards Aleppo has stalled with heavy
losses despite Russian bombing support.
ALSO SOHR reports that Islamic State shot down an Alawite
jet which was probably flying low to strafe civilians. The
pilot bailed out and managed to reach regime forces.
Iraqi Military stopped in its tracks. Unable to Move Towards
Mosul. Tit for Tat attacks by IS.
By April 17, the Iraqi Shia military has been constrained to
announce that its planned advance on Mosul will not be
possible for a while though a huge Shia force is ready.
America is bombing the Caliphate daily to soften the
Islamics for a Shia advance but to no avail.
The Shia regime has blocked all food supplies into Fallujah
which is in IS control and this is causing serious civilian
suffering.
IS fighters are attacking Kurdish positions in the north and
Shia positions around Baghdad almost on a daily basis in
response to American air strikes on Islamic positions.
Some Appreciation of New Trend's Obituary on Dr. Mumtaz
Ahmed
We are not Permanent Enemies
My Dear S M Khalid,
Thank you for sharing decently rather artistically made --
clipping from NEW TREND which I had seen earlier as
well.
That is fair enough. It is a proof of Dr. Mumtaz's goodness
.The enemy's evidence is most powerful testimony of one's
virtues.
My old friend Zahid Bukhari an other target of 'butshikan's
arrows of dushnam and multiple accusations is here in
Chicago on a visit and intends to visit me today or
tomorrow. We shall certainly talk about Mumtaz marhoom and
revive our memories of him, inshaAllah. May Allah guide us
all to be good and free from bad sentiments which often
remain hidden deep rooted about those who differ and oppose
us sometime or have said bad words when unable to control
their anger just for not agreeing on issues .This is a
temporary life and those who wish real happiness and reward
in both the worlds must free their hearts from all vile
feelings for ordinary things. I do appreciate the obituary
of janab 'butshikan' sahab for Dr. Mumtaz which shows that
his anger against him has subsided after his demise somehow
which is a good after all.
Wassalam,
Zubair bin Umer.

[Sunan of Abu Dawud.]
Many Muslims, over the centuries of decline and
colonialism, forgot that Islam is a COMPLETE way of life.
Islam became only a matter of rituals and ceremonies.
Maulana Maudoodi re-introduced the original Islam, that
Islam is a complete way of life, guiding us in every aspect
of existence.
In America, we must re-learn this reality. Whether it is
politics, economics, social development, war and peace, the
guidance must come from the Qur'an and the authentic hadith.
All these matters are spiritual for Muslims, not
secular.
The media are spewing out propaganda on a daily basis
which violates all that is sacred in Islam. We must not be
influenced by this daily flood of abuse and slander.
We will be influenced unless we study the Qur'an and the
hadith on a daily basis. not just on juma'.
We are obligated as Muslims to give the message of Islam
to non-Muslims. Are we seeking knowledge to prepare for this
great challenge?
If you don't know, keep quiet or say that you don't know.
Turning your own opinion into "Islam" is strictly
forbidden.
Always pray for Allah's help and Guidance. We may not be
able to see or sense His help but the universe is full of
those who are fulfilling the help Allah sends us. Among them
are the angels, including two who record all we do, as well
as the Jinn.
"Say: It has been revealed to me that a company of Jinns
listened (to the Qur'an). They said, 'We have really heard a
wonderful Recital!" [The Qur'an 72:1]
The Jinn are extra-terrestrial beings. They make choices
like us. If we recite the Qur'an, they will be on our side.
They heard the Prophet, pbuh, reciting the Qur'an and some
became Muslims.
Try to understand the power of the Jinn. See the story of
Suleman [Soloman], pbuh, in the Qur'an. One of the Jinn
brought the throne of the Queen of Sheba to Suleman in the
blinking of an eye.
So remember, we are not alone in the universe. We come
from Allah and unto Him we are returning. So prepare for
that return which is inevitable.

Palestinians Take to Streets to Mark Prisoners Day
Thousands demonstrate in West Bank and Gaza Strip to shed
light on plight of 7,000 Palestinians incarcerated by
Israel.
Ramallah, occupied West Bank - Thousands of Palestinians
took to the streets across the West Bank and Gaza Strip on
Sunday to mark Prisoners Day, to shed light on the plight of
7,000 compatriots who are incarcerated by Israel.
Prisoners Day has been commemorated annually since 1974,
when the first Palestinian detainee - Mahmoud Hijazi - was
released in a swap deal with Israel.
In the centre of the West Bank city of Ramallah, families
gathered raising Palestinian flags and holding framed
pictures and posters of their incarcerated loved ones:
Faheem al-Khateeb, who has been in prison since 2015, Adeeb
Mafarjeh, currently on hunger strike, and Marwan
al-Barghouti, the Fatah leader and parliamentarian, who some
refer to as the "Palestinian Mandela".
"There are 750 administrative detainees, three of them
women, and there are 700 sick prisoners," said Issa Qaraqe,
head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation Commission for
Prisoners Affairs. Administrative detainees can be held
without trial or charge for extended periods of time.
"We will spare no effort to have them released by either
turning to international bodies, like the International
Criminal Court, or by continuing to shed light on their
plight with events like these," Qaraqe added.
A tearful mother, who was carrying a picture of her son,
said she is no longer allowed to visit him in prison. "My
visitation rights were taken away, because Israeli
authorities claimed I was carrying a knife," said the mother
of Eyad Fawaghreh, who has been on hunger strike for more
than a month to protest the denial of family visits.
Fawaghreh, who has served 11 of a 27-year sentence, is
refusing painkillers and vitamins until his visitation
rights are restored, said Yousef al-Nasassra, a lawyer
representing him.
There are 30 prisoners who have been incarcerated since
before the Oslo Peace Accords were signed in 1993 between
the PLO and Israel, according to the Palestinian Prisoners
Club. Among the prisoners are six members of parliament and
18 journalists, the group said.
In Jenin, high schools on Sunday dedicated one class to
teaching about the prisoner population, which includes 75
students and 30 teachers, according to the PA Ministry of
Education. Local radio stations aired stories about
incarcerated Palestinians, churches tolled their bells, and
mosques used their loud speakers to pray for prisoners
throughout the day.
Outside the premises of the Red Cross, some gathered to sign
a petition calling for the release of their loved ones. "We
call upon the international community to investigate the
violations against our brothers and sisters inside Israeli
prisons," said Mansour al-Saadi, Jenin's deputy governor.
"Israel is even imprisoning 12-year-olds. Where is the
outrage," he asked, referring to a Palestinian child
currently being held by Israel and due to be released on
April 24.
In Gaza City, members of the various political factions -
including warring parties Hamas and Fatah - took part in a
rally that ended outside the Red Cross premises.
As party members used the occasion to highlight the need for
ending the division between the two factions, the group
slammed the PA, and its ruling party Fatah, which it said
was doing an "inadequate job supporting the prisoners".
"The prisoners' case must be brought to the negotiating
table," said Wasfi Qabha, a Hamas leader, and former
minister of detainees. "The PA signed a peace agreement with
Israel without securing any guarantees to release our
prisoners."

Nawaz Sharif who Betrayed Aimal Kansi & Dr. Aafia, has now
Betrayed Pakistan's Wealth. Sirajul Haq Addressed huge
Gathering in Buner.
LAHORE, Apr. 17; Ameer, Jamaat e Islami, Pakistan, Senator
Sirajul Haq, has said that this country had been established
for the enforcement of Islamic order and those talking of
liberalism should join their young- ones in Europe which is
both liberal and secular. He was addressing a big public
meeting at Buner on Sunday.
Sirajul Haq said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had tried
to please Washington by hastily executing Ghazi Mumtaz
Qadri, but this had earned him so much public hatred that
even at the Masjid e Nabwi, (the Prophet's mosque) in
Madina, the pilgrims had cursed him and shouted slogans of
"Death to Nawaz".
The JI chief said that the Panama leaks had caused a turmoil
all over the world and Prime Ministers were stepping down on
public protest, whereas Pakistan's Prime Minister was trying
to have his own way. However, he said, the nation desired
that a Commission headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme
Court should dig out the facts and determine the position of
the Prime Minister on this score.
Referring to the law passed by the Punjab Assembly regarding
Women s protection, Sirajul Haq said that this law had been
greeted widely by the US and the west. He said that the
rights of the women folk had been first protested by Islam.
On the other hand, the secularists and liberals were known
for marrying secretly and they turned out their lives from
the homes at midnight. He said that the country could not be
ruled any more by shameless rulers who had handed over Aimal
Kansi and Hafiza A'afia Siddiqui, to the US for petty
financial gains.
He reiterated that the JI on coming to power, would ensure
free medical cover to those suffering from five major
diseases, homes to homeless people, and salaries to the
madrissah teachers and Imams of mosques, equal to that of
the policemen.

"Black" Politicians Show Their True Colors +
Armed Defenders Stopped Racist "rally" at Nation of Islam
Mosque.
by Sis. Aisha [Jamaat al-Muslimeen]
New York City - C.P. Time is a stereotype of Black folk. It
stands for Colored People Time reflecting Black people's
supposed lack of respect for time. Many years ago, if you
were a Black person in an office environment and set an
appointment, the White person giving the appointment would
say, "The appointment is at 9am but you can come 9:30am C.P.
Time." I remember one of my college professors, Dr.
Babatunde, who was Nigerian, complain about that Black
lateness stereotype. He said, in Africa, if you told a
friend to meet you somewhere around 3pm and he showed up ten
minutes later, that was not a problem. He said the African
way is a little more laid back. Now, he said a half hour
late is a problem.
Recently, Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, New York
Mayor Bill "Thomas Jefferson" De Blasio, and Leslie Odom, Jr
(a Black actor) were at an event. Hillary Clinton was
greeted on stage by the Mayor whom she ribbed for taking his
time to endorse. Mayor De Blasio, who is married to a Black
woman, made the comment, "Sorry, Hillary, I was running on
C.P. time." There are reports of gasps and groans coming
from the audience. Leslie Odom, Jr. also expressed his
dislike for the joke. But, Hillary Clinton's response was,
"Cautious politician time. I've been there."
Very telling! Her comment reflects what chameleons
politicians are and how they show different faces to
different people. She says one thing to Black voters and
tells another to White voters.
It doesn't matter because Black voters are "traditionally"
democrat and they are very familiar with the Clintons. Last
week, Hillary Clinton was at an event in Harlem where she
could barely get the words out of her mouth before receiving
thunderous applause from her Black professional worshipers.
She has been deified in Harlem.
The conversations between Mayor Bill De Blasio and his Black
wife must be interesting and cringe-worthy, as well. This
Mayor has made it very clear that being a part of the "good
old boys club" is very important to him. White supremacy is
the backdrop for this entire country's system: educational,
political, judicial, economic. You name it. Trust me, his
wife knows her "place." It is nothing personal. In spite of
marrying and having a family with her, he is the superior
one. There are many White men, with this kuffar belief, who
have enjoyed the company of Black women. President Thomas
Jefferson was a notable figure.
Note: Bonnie and Clyde have NOTHING on The Clintons! As a
husband and wife team, Hillary and Bill Clinton have done
killed more human beings, particularly those who are Muslim
and of African-descent. The same social improvements that
Black people are looking for, and will continue to look for,
could have been made when Bill Clinton was President. The
media is ignoring this information.

Anti-Muslim "Protestors" Met By Armed Muslims/Supporters
On April 2nd, a Saturday, in Dallas, TX, an armed
anti-Muslim "protest" took place.....at the wrong mosque!
Armed anti-Muslim protesters tried to intimidate the Muslims
at a Nation of Islam mosque and were met by a large group of
Muslims and their supporters. These "protesters" were
wearing masks and dressed in fatigues ( a modern day Ku Klux
Klan costume). These anti-Muslim "protesters" were easily
outnumbered 10 to 1 and were met by armed supporters, as
well. When word spread of this "rally" the New Black Panther
Party, Huey P. Newton Gun Club, and, surprisingly, the
Bloods and the Crips gangs were there to show their support
for the Nation of Islam Mosque #48. Al-humdulillah!
Police officers stood between these "protesters" and the
mosque supporters. There were some police also stationed on
the roofs of neighboring buildings. It makes you wonder who
were they there to protect? The anti-Muslim organization is
called BAIR - Anti-Bureau of American Islamic Relations.
A NOI Mosque supporter, Purlie Gates, was upset that such a
protest could take place. These types of "protest rallies"
do not occur in every community. He said that if it were
reversed, with Muslims threatening to go into Highland Park
(must be a predominantly White area), City Hall would have
stopped it. But, the Dallas Police Department issued a
statement, which says, "The department is committed to
protecting the Constitutional rights of all citizens and
will make every effort to keep this protest peaceful."
However, Constitutional rights are only afforded to certain
groups in America, while other groups' rights are trampled
upon by the courts and law enforcement. Study the history of
the Black Panther Party and how they were maligned and
slaughtered by law enforcement while trying to exercise
their Second Amendment rights.
The Ku Klux Klan has been marching in Black communities for
over 100 years under the guise of First Amendment speech.
However, these marches and rallies have been nothing more
than a form of intimidation.
Of course, there were no arrests or violence at this
"rally." Many in the Nation of Islam are very well-versed in
Constitutional and local laws. Their security forces, male
and female, are trained to know their rights and
limitations.

Muslims Protest "Attempted Suicide" at Attica by Entrapped
Prisoner Ahmed Ferhani
A coalition of community organizers, civil rights groups,
and families impacted by NYPD surveillance gathered in
downtown Manhattan Tuesday for a vigil for Ahmed Ferhani, a
Muslim prisoner who recently attempted suicide at the Attica
Correctional Facility.
About 50 people with placards bearing the name Ahmed Ferhani
rallied outside the headquarters of the New York City Police
Department (NYPD) on Tuesday evening, demanding a response
to the recent in-custody suicide attempt by a 30-year-old
Algerian American in the Attica Correctional Facility.
Holding signs that read "Justice for Ahmed" and "Stop
Racial, Ethnic and Religious Profiling," speaker after
speaker came forward to piece together a picture of a Muslim
man who, advocates and attorneys say, was ensnared by the
NYPD in a terror plot. The police used a confidential
informant to involve Ferhani in a bogus scheme to blow up
synagogues in New York.
Ferhani is in a coma after trying to hang himself in prison
last week.
Boston
Corporation which Exploited Syria & Iraq Opposed by Black
Bus Drivers' Union. "Dump Veolia" campaign. Workers also
helped "Free Aafia" Movement. Islam forbids Private
Ownership of Natural Resources.
by Sis. Karin Freidemann [Boston]
Islam often presents itself as the Middle Path between the
two extremes of Capitalism and Communism. Islamic Law would
eliminate the need for class struggle by creating a society
where property owners are held accountable. Yet, no Islamic
society exists in this century. What is important to
understand however is that Islam considers environmental and
mineral resources to belong to Allah. That means nobody can
own them. An Islamic movement has to protect and utilize
natural resources for the public benefit. Leftist speech
refers to "The People" while Islamic speech invokes "Allah"
- but essentially they are both saying the same thing: that
water and other resources belong to the government and
cannot be privatized.
We have been hearing the word "privatization" a lot as local
governments for example Flint, Michigan take the water and
sewage infrastructure out of public control and give it to a
private company that then contaminates the water and
destroys the pipes. The Flint move was touted as part of
"austerity measures," even though the privatization actually
cost the city much more. It was really about corporations
lining their pockets with public money. When a government
hires a "private" company to run basic civilian
infrastructure, we are not talking about a small private
company with scientific expertise to solve environmental or
organizational problems. These "private" companies are
actually huge international corporations, which are steadily
consolidating their power to create what increasingly
appears to be a global takeover of control that is able to
overrule local governments and impose its will on the people
via distribution or non-distribution of water, food, and
resources. Islamic hadith prophesied the coming of such a
global rule - Dajjal - that represents an evil force of
oppression, which rules by controlling access to food,
water, and other resources.
The poorest of the poor, from India to South America suffer
from lack of access to clean water while their freedom of
movement is often brutally hindered. These conditions do not
arise because of the backwardness of the people but are due
to deliberate maneuvers by the political elite. The poor are
further degraded by unsafe working conditions and inadequate
compensation from corporate bosses that prevent workers from
organizing to demand improvements. The ongoing current
struggle against multinational corporations is being
spearheaded by labor unions and social justice groups in a
wide variety of locations. Because of increasing global
communication, activists involved in protests and strikes
all over the world are not only able to offer solidarity but
compare notes on the common global enemy and strategies for
defeating it. An increasingly organized, informed and
supported labor movement can only be a good thing.
The business connections between those building the wall
between the US and Mexico and those building walls
surrounding Palestinian areas are unsurprising, but not
everyone is aware of the vast extent of the massive web of
international corporate control of water, sewage, and
transportation systems around the globe. A particularly evil
French corporation named Veolia, which dates back to the
time of Napoleon, made huge profits from French colonization
of the West Indies and Algeria by building railways and
water treatment plants. In 2013 the UN hired Veolia to
destroy Syria's chemical weapons. Veolia thus profited off
the Syrian civil war, while engaging in a political charade,
as the UN continued to allow Assad to destroy infrastructure
and mass murder political opponents using non-chemical
weapons. Veolia is also profiting off the US occupation of
Iraq, as the Iraqi Ministry has employed Veolia to build a
water treatment plant.
This same company, Veolia, is currently engaged in
privatizing the water and transportation systems in many
cities around the US, committing fraud and embezzlement,
contaminating water, reducing services to poor areas while
increasing fees, and breaking union contracts.
In 2013, Veolia also took over the management of Boston
Public School Bus transportation, sparking an ongoing
struggle by the school bus drivers union USW Local 8751
against Veolia's unfair labor practices including payroll
shortages, impossible demands on bus drivers, overcrowding
of buses, failure to provide agreed upon benefits, and bad
faith negotiations resulting in the attempted prosecution
and termination of union organizers. Veolia's efforts to
crush Boston's only black and immigrant-majority union
failed due to hundreds of protesting bus drivers and
incredible support from solidarity activists. This union's
struggle is important on many levels because not only are
they resisting a corporation that has already destroyed many
other cities' water supply and workers' rights on several
continents, but Boston bus drivers themselves have a
decades-long history of supporting people's justice issues.
They played a huge role on the front lines of desegregation,
escorting black children to school through angry racist
white mobs. Not only has the bus drivers' union stood
against Israeli Apartheid but they did much of the
organizing and provided the sound system for Boston's recent
rally to support Dr. Aafia Siddique on March 8, 2016.
The Dump Veolia campaign is growing in many countries around
the world from Chile to India, resulting in a surge of
political and social networking. "Veolia is just one window
to understand the need for joint struggle, how
corporatization entangles us with past histories of
oppression and present global resistances," writes Maia
Brown for Stop Veolia Seattle. "When we understand the
historical continuities, exemplified by Veolia, between
early structures of Western Imperialism and
industrialization and today's globalization and
neoliberalism, we strengthen our ability to form new
solidarities and communities of struggle."
