double mastectomy. Presence of BRCA-1 or BRCA-2 genes does
not necessarily mean one will get breast cancer. There are
many epigenetic factors which must be considered..
Jolie did a gross disservice to herself and the public by
getting the double mastectomy, as her iconic stature will
make the procedure much more palatable to the public.
Meanwhile, stocks for Myriad Corporation, which holds the
patents for the BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 genes, have shot up..

Nigeria: Islamics take over three states. Army launches all
out offensive:
On May 16, Nigerian military forces [backed by the US and
Israel] launched an all out offensive against Islamic forces
known as Boko Haram which have taken over the border states
of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. The army has killed hundreds of
civilians in the city of Maiduguri itself in random
executions. The killings have had the effect of mass support
for the Islamic fighters and general revulsion against the
military which are Christians and "Muslim" mercenaries.
On May 17, BBC reported that the Nigerian air force is
bombing the areas supporting the Islamic fighters. Nigeria
admitted killing 21 people but the actual deaths and
injuries are in the hundreds. However, the people of ALL
THREE states are supporting the mujahideen. For the first
time the mujahideen hit a Nigerian plane with rifle fire and
it crash landed.
Also, May 18, the mujahideen, showing great resilience,
launched an attack in Katsina state to divert the attention
of the military. The military and police suffered heavy
losses and banks and government buildings were set on fire.
The US has expressed concern that the human rights
violations by the military may bring more support for the
Islamic fighters. {Muslims are no longer cowed down by the
use of overwhelming force.]

Russia and USA working together to save the Assad regime but
mujahideen have most of Syria...
May 18: Raqqa in central Syria and the areas around it
leading to Iraq are now [since March 9] firmly in the
hands of the mujahideen, the biggest group among them being
al-Nusra. Sharia courts have been set up and bakeries have
been re-organized to feed the people after Assad's jets
destroyed them. [British paper the Independent published
details.]
From Aleppo to the Turkish border, the area is in largely
Islamic hands, mostly al-Nusra and smaller groups.
From Damascus to the Jordanian border there is a mix of
mujahideen control broken by Assad's tank attacks and jet
fighter attacks. Al-Shabiha Alawite death squads have
retaken parts of Homs and killed many people.
Assad's flight route to the Alawite coast line has been
secured for the time being by Hizbullah forces coming in
from Lebanon but the mujahideen may break through here and
support for the mujahideen is growing in Lebanon.
Assad's forces have successfully resisted the encirclement
of Damascus with the use of tanks and jets which have
inflicted losses on the mujahideen and taken back two of the
suburbs but two others remain in the nands of al-Nusra
although it is running out nof ammunition and medical
supplies.
Both the US and Russia are concerned about the victories of
the mujahideen, especially after al-Nusra's formal
acceptance of the leadership of Dr. al-Zawahiri, the
successor to Osama bin Laden. Top reps of Russia and USA
are in talks to save the Assad regime if it is willing to
make concessions. Large sums of money have been sent to the
Free Syrian Army by Britain and seemingly Qatar. The FSA is
the secular opposition to Assad and Senator MCcain has been
calling for a year that it should be quickly armed to
counter the Islamics but to no avail. Russia is pumping
re-supply to Assad.
Assad's agents apparently blew up parts of the Turkish
border town of Reyhanli to stir up the Turks against Syrian
refugees but with only some success. The Turks have been the
most generous in their support for the people of Syria and
have even allowed small arms to be smuggled to the
resistance.

Also, Dr. Kaukab Siddique's report on the slaughter of
unarmed Bengali Muslims in Dhaka, by 10,000 military forces

Outreach in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Area
On May 17, Jamaat al-Muslimeen literature was given to 25
Muslims after Juma' at the Islamic center of Ambridge, a
suburb of Pittsburgh.
The brother who is doing this is a "white" convert to Islam.
The 25 people are of Egyptian origin.
Malcolm Shabazz
On May 9, Malcolm Shabazz, the grandson of Malcolm X
[al-Hajj Malik Shabazz], was murdered in Mexico. He
published a statement before he was murdered. It raises the
fear that it was not a murder but an assassination. Dr.
Abdulalim Shabazz, Sis. Aamira Ibrahim and others deserve
thanks for the info they sent us.
Young Malcolm had fallen on bad ways and was doing things
which Islam absolutely does not permit. However, those who
knew his potential as the grandson of the great Malcolm X
and his strong inclination towards Iran, may have decided to
silence him. Hadith says that Allah forgives sins like
drinking if one asks sincerely for forgiveness; shirk or
taking loyalty to anti-Islam forces is not forgiven.
We have published young Malcolm's complete statement, uncut,

waiters in a tavern. Intelligent readers can see the holes

Rally to Support Lynne Stewart, Attorney for the Blind

May 15: I attended the vigil for Lynne Stewart today at the
federal court in downtown Manhattan. Several hundred people
were there to show support for sister Lynne. Her husband
was very active.
There were many signs supporting Lynne which the people were
holding. There was one that said:
Free all Political Prisoners
and the chant was
"today Lynne Stewart ,tomorrow you"
which is true.When I was there at the start there were only
about twenty five people but people kept going and coming
till its finish at 600 pm. So more people came after
work.The Muslims were not there except myself. It's sad to
see this but the struggle continues.

US Citizen Held in Iraq since 2004 without charge
FREE SHAWKI AHMED OMAR
Shawki Ahmed Omar has been detained in Iraq since 2004. He
was arrested and tortured by US forces before being handed
over to Iraqi authorities. His health has rapidly
deteriorated as the result of a recent hunger strike.
Instead of looking after and helping one of its own citizens
abroad, the US government has left Shawki Omar to languish
behind bars where he has faced years of torture and abuse at
the hands of both US and Iraqi forces. He is yet to be
charged with a crime. The wife of Shawki Omar has been
protesting alone, with her daughter, outside the US Embassy
in London every Saturday for the past 3-4 weeks.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said
that the Muslims are like one body, and if any part of it is
in pain, the other parts work together to relieve the pain.
For this reason, Help the Oppressed has organised an
emergency demonstration outside the US embassy in London
this past Saturday in order support our oppressed sister,
raise awareness and demand the immediate release of Shawki
Ahmed Omar.

Jamaate Islami's Seeming Lack of Success in Pakistani
Elections:
Why?After those huge gatherings?

Overseas Pakistanis are puzzled at the apparent defeat of
Jamaate Islami in Pakistan's May 11 elections. My tools of
analysis provide the following answers:
-
Pakistani elections are seemingly held at the behest of
America. Pakistan is under the control of the USA. Here is
the evidence:
-
USA targets its enemies within Pakistan with predator
drones. Several thousand people, mostly civilians and
including women and children have been killed in these drone
attacks.Pakistani regime has taken no action against these
attacks although the public is riled up.
-
Pakistan's military, which is the main factor in
Pakistani politics, is funded, armed and ordered by USA.
When Pak Taliban and sharia supporters became strong in Swat
and other frontier areas, America expressed alarm. The Paki
army then launched an all out offensive. The entire
population of Swat ewas evicted by the army to provide a
free fire zone against the Islamic fighters led by
Fazlullah.

In Punjab, huge sums of money were spent by Nawaz Sharif
to win a landslide victory. Sharif is supported both by the
US, the Saudis and of course the USA. Jamaate Islami could
not come anywhere near the money needed to reach voters in
Punjab.
-
In Karachi and Hyderabad, MQM, a fascist ethnic party
hooked up with the previous General [Musharraf] and has been
ruling with terror, murder and kickbacks-bribery. Large
areas of Karachi have become "no go" areas where entrance
is only by permission of MQM. The leader of MQM is the
darling of the West and lives in luxury in London from where
he orders terror strikes against opponents in Karachi and
Hyderabad.

The rest of Sindh is feudal and is controlled by the PPP,
whose leader Zardari is a puppet of the West. He is the
outgoing president and looted the country during his regime.
-
For the US, the real problem was Frontier province. Here
Imran Khan was used. He suddenly received huge sums of money
and travelled in the difficult terrain by helicopter and
private jet. Looks like the military helped him. He used
anti-drone slogans and ate off the anti-American sentiment
mobilized by Jamaate Islami.
-
In Baluchistan, the military is trying to crush an
insurrection. The murder of Nawab Bugti , a top Baluch
leader during Musharraf's regime, and the disappearance of
hundreds of Baluch activists, many said to be tortured by
the army and killed, has inflamed Baluchistan to near
outright rebellion.
So, why did Jamaate Islami contest the elections?
Jamaate Islami is a non-violent movement, non-sectarian,
which wants to create an Islamic state by peaceful means.
A well crafted campaign led by Syed Munawar Hasan had a ONE
POINT agenda: America must withdraw from the region.
Beyond Jamaate Islami's expectations and way beyond its
resources, the people of Pakistan flockerd to its call. Some
of the meetings Munawar Hasan addressed were the biggest in
Pakistan's history.
When elections approached, Jamaate Islami issued a radical
manifesto which promised an end to feudalism. A women's
movement sprang up to support JI.
MQM was seriously challenged by JI in Karachi.
Thus all the established forces were determined not to let
JI win even a decent number of seats.
Suffice it to say that JI knew it would not win. Its
leadership is aware that real change must be preceded by a
REVOLUTION, otherwise in conventional politics those who
have the money, the military and the police plus the
gangsters on their side, win.
Jamaate Islami is not shocked or demoralized by the results
of the elections. It is trying to work with Imran Khan and
sending greetings to the winners and calling for new
elections in Karachi.
JI won only 7 provincial assembly seats and a pathetic 3
seats in the national assembly but it reached huge numbers
of people who had never heard of JI before.
Previous JI leaders used to work with other political
parties and its ideology never had a real impact. This time
JI stood alone and considering its pitiful resources did
very well indeed.
This is the most important point:
If Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, had participated in elections in
Makka when 365 idols were in the Ka'aba,, who would have
won?
If Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, had participated in elections in
all of Arabia after the Islamic community was established in
Madinah and the backward tribes had risen against Islam with
Persian & Roman empire support, who would have won?
Obviously Truth, Justice and end to Oppression can only
happen AFTER a revolution. Those who struggle for
righteousness are always a minority but they are the ones
who change the course of history.
Why is Munawar Hasan a worthy Successor to Maulana Maudoodi
as Jamaate Islami leader?

Br. Saleem Khalid, from Pakistan, has brought to our
attention attacks on Munawar Hasan by one of Maudoodi's sons
who went astray years back . Some of Jamaate Islami's old
guard too think that Munawar Hasan has not stayed within the
traditional Jamaate Islami way of doing things set by
Maudoodi. Here is my response to these old timers.
Maulana Maudoodi was a great scholar and he laid the
foundations of JI. We already know that. But he was a human
being who encouraged dissent and criticism. In one of his
numerous letters to me, he wrote : "I have never considered
myself above criticism."
It would not surprise me that young Br. Munawar Hasan
criticized him. Inner party criticism was much encouraged.
Those who did not understand, criticized Maudoodi and then
LEFT, such as Maulana Islahi and Dr. Israr. They should not
have left. It was their weakness, not his. Munawar Hasan did
not leave and Alhamdulillah today JI is a force all over the
country.
I would consider this Maulana Maudoodi-Munawar relationship
like that of the Prophet, pbuh and Khalid, r.a. Do you get
it?
Munawar challenged America by peaceful means. He challenged
supply of NATO thru Pakistan. He challenged the drone
attacks. He went back to Karachi again and again to break
MQM's grip and drew HUGE crowds. For the first time in JI
history, JI has drawn the support of tens of thousands of
women.
I know because I visited Pakistan repeatedly after 9.11. I
saw tens of thousands, including women, giving DHARNA [sit
down strike] in 120 degree summer heat to oppose America and
Zardari. I saw the emergence of a new JI calling for
electricity and help for flood victims.
This is a new JI, built on the foundations laid by Maulana
Maudoodi but way beyond anything he could do.
This peeri-muridee attitude towards Maulana Maudoodi which
you and the old guard have was repulsive for Maulana sahib.
When he was dying, he said to me: Inhone mujhe zinda mazar
bana lia hai. ["They have made me into a living tomb."]
Remember I travelled a thousand miles to translate the
speech he gave in Toronto.
Without Munawar, JI was just a pietistic group of do
gooders. Mian Tufail Muhammad was a very pious man but as a
good friend said to me: A good SECOND man can never be a
good FIRST man. He turned JI into a reactionary group.
Munawar wants a revolution but by peaceful means. It is a
very difficult task.
What Will Happen Now after "elections" in Pakistan
No one can know the future but here are some
prognostications.

Nothing will change except for the worse.
-
Corruption and nepotism will continue.
-
Tremendous poverty of the great majority will continue.
-
The great wealth of the few will continue.
What could get worse?
-
Indian influence will increase with the inflow of Hindu
ideas about the inferiority of women.
-
Deserts will increase owing to Indian control of rivers.
-
Floods and natural disasters will also increase owing to
environmental erosion.
-
The military will go all out to crush the uprisings in
Frontier and Baluchistan.
-
Karachi will descend into an inferno of gangsterism and
drugs.
Any hope?
-
Millions of Pakistan's people believe that Islam is the
truth and stands for justice.
-
There is a chance that the believers will unite and join
hands with the mujahideen.
-
There is a chance that the poor and the oppressed will
rise up without waiting for the next elections.
-
There is a chance that lower ranks of the military may
join the mujahideen. [A slim chance, but it could happen]
-
Public demand that General Kayani resign and be brought
to trial.
-
Alliance with Mullah Umar after the victory of the
Taliban in Afghanistan.
-
Successful uprising in Kashmir and secessionist movements
in India.
-
A Maulana Bhashani type leader may emerge to lead the
masses against the power structure.
Most probably nothing will change but with God's people you
never know!

I sincerely appreciate the care & concern of the People over
my well-being after Press TV's report of the most recent
events which have transpired regarding the F.B.I.'s
harassment of me.
Given the storm of lies, and half-truths that come with
being associated with being the descendant of El Hajj Malik
el Shabazz, also known as Minister Malcolm X, any and
everything that I do; great or small, good or not so good,
real or imagined is subject to controversy. However, in this
missive I will take this opportunity to properly & fully
disclose what transpired.
In the beginning of 2012 I had been informed that I was
under investigation by the F.B.I.'s Counter Terrorism Task
Force Unit located in Goshen, N.Y.
The agents of this division-and in collaboration with
others-have visited several residences of which I was known
by them to frequent. However, they would never come when
they knew me to actually be there. They would leave their
cards with the residents asking them to tell me to call
them, and then would tell surrounding residents to observe
the house and to notify them if they saw me.
These are the homes of long-time friends, and very close
supporters. Yet, when federal agents begin knocking on
someone's door on multiple occasions to snoop, and ask
questions, whether one is guilty of an offense or not, it's
enough to coerce people into distancing themselves from you.
This cheap tactic employed by the F.B.I. is a means of
agitation & harassment. They seek to neutralize my
networking abilities.
They have visited locations in California, Chicago, Miami
and most aggressively in New York.
People were advising me that if I had nothing to hide, then
I should just contact them as requested and cooperate.
Though I must say that in these kind of matters I am of a
particular ethic. For one, I have been engaged in no
criminal activity of their concern, and they could have
located me if they so chose. Secondly, I don't recognize the
authority in them beckoning me.
It wasn't even until my mother informed me that they had
been contacting her that I truly became agitated. She
advised me to see what they had to say, and so I obliged the
next time they came around looking for me. My encounter was
with 2 federal agents of Goshen, N.Y.'s Counter Terrorism
Task Foci Unit. The primary agent identified himself as
Special Agent Tom Brozicky.
They expressed concern over-as they put it-my "international
travels"; I have lived & studied in Damascus, Syria for over
a year, and now the U.S. is instigating conflict within the
very same region; I went on ex-congresswoman/former
presidential candidate Cynthia Mckinney's delegation along
with Dr. Randy Short to Libya, and met with Leader Muammar
Gadhafi one week prior to N.A.T.O. intervention and I was
most recently getting ready to travel to Tehran, Iran to be
a participant of the International Fajr Film Festival and
give a lecture addressing the issues of Hollywood and
viole
I was picked up by authorities after I filed for a visa to
Iran, and 2 days prior to my departure. A detective squad
from the City of Middletown Police Department surrounded me
in the street about 2 blocks from where I was residing. They
asked me my name, and I gave them an alias, but they were
already well aware of who I actually was. I didn't tell them
my real name because I didn't know what was going on. When I
was brought before a Judge of City of Middletown court I was
surprised to be informed that I was being charged with Grand
Larceny, and False Impersonation charge. Then I was sent to
jail, and told to appear again 7 days later. Then following
court date the bogus charge of Grand Larceny, which they
only put to justify stopping me in first place, was dropped.
And they left me to face the False Impersonation. I was
offered 90 days for the offense of giving the authorities
the wrong name which I declined before bailing out after 2
weeks.
When I was being held within the belly of the beast on
trumped up charges, to my rescue came the journalist at
Press TV based in Iran. My relationship with powerful &
progressive news outfit began in April of 2012, and prior to
that I had discussions with their journalist regarding
current events internationally. I developed a positive
rapport with some of them, and as a result was invited to
travel to Iran to discuss the impact of Hollywood in
stereotyping Muslims, Iranians and African people. From
January 15th through 18th, 2013, I was a featured
interviewee for the Press TV documentary "The Facade of the
American Dream". And prior to my date of departure to Iran,
Lifetime television released a television bio-picture called
"Betty & Coretta" which was a sensationalistic
misrepresentation of my grandparents, my mother and me. This
film aside from being poorly acted, and shallow in depth
also threatened to inflame old controversies, and open
unhealed wounds and to remind the public of sad outcomes
without ever identifying B.O.S.S.I., the C.I.A., F.B.I. and
other forces that set the climate for my grandfather's
assassination, and made my family a long-suffering casualty
of COINTELPRO, and other anti-Black repression programs.
Naturally, anything done to stir up old hatred of The
Shabazz Family will impact me as the name-sake, and first
male heir of Malcolm X, and whether I am high or low in
fortunes does not exempt me from this reality.
The formula for a public assassination is: the character
assassination before the physical assassination; so one has
to be made killable before the eyes of the public in order
for their eventual murder to then deemed justifiable. And
when the time arrives for these hits to be carried out
you're not going to see a C.I.A. agent with a suit & tie,
and a badge that says "C.I.A." walk up to someone, and pull
the trigger. What they will do is to out-source to local
police departments in the region of their target, and to
employ those that look like the target of interest to
infiltrate the workings in order to set up the environment
for the eventual assassination (character,
physical/incarceration, exile) to take place.
For several months prior to my arrest in late January, 2013
I faced a pattern of harassment from law enforcement which
is usually reserved for important figures.
[[On Thursday, November 1, 2012 @ 11:53pm in the park circle
area of Middletown, N.Y. I was stopped by officers of the
Middletown Police Department, and given a ticket for
"J-Walking" (crossing in the middle of the street), which
then escalated into a "Disorderly Conduct" supposedly
because of the exchange of words that I had with the
officers. I told them that they couldn't possibly be serious
for writing me a "J-Walking ticket", that I didn't
appreciate how they were treating me and that they shouldn't
be looking at me as less of a man because they were in
police uniform. For this I was arrested, the officers stole
the little amount of money that I had on me, they then
stripped me and threw me in a freezing precinct cell for the
remainder of that early morning. I was finally taken before
the "Judge Steven Brockett" around 1:30pm. He gave me an
unreasonable bail, and then ordered that I be remanded to
the Orange county Jail.
This penalty may seem a bit extreme or harsh to most of you,
but here is where it gets worse: On Tuesday, October 30th,
exactly 2 nights prior to this incident, the same officer "J
Berman" who wrote me the ticket for "J-Walking" &
"Disorderly Conduct" stopped me coming from out of a store
in the same area, and questioned me as to what I was doing.
I told him that I was coming out of the store. He asked to
see what I bought which was a pack of sun flower seeds. I
had actually just so happened to be eating a few while he
was talking to me, and I spit one of the shells on the
ground. At this point officer "J Berman" threatened to write
me a ticket for littering. Needless to say, I was
dumbfounded, but I went home that night.
Yet, it still doesn't even begin there. I had an encounter
with other officers of the Midletown Police Department one
week prior to officer "J Berman's" threats to write me a
ticket for spitting a sun flower seed on the ground: I was
coming out of a restaurant with my mother, and her friend.
As the 3 of us entered the car to leave 2 police cars
converged on our vehicle, and boxed us in. My mother was
petrified. With guns drawn I was then ordered to step out of
the back seat. I asked them why to which they replied that I
had several warrants for my arrest. I told them that they
were mistaken, but I still complied with their request.
Humiliated in front of all on-lookers I was then thrown on
the car while the officers ripped through my pockets. After
they were done they said that it was my lucky day because I
actually didn't have any warrants at all, and so I was free
to go! One of these officer's name was "R. Ribeiro"...
You may wonder if it could possibly get any worse than this.
Well, it does! Approximately 3 weeks prior to the public
humiliation of my mother, and me by "R Ribeiro" and another
officer of the Middletown Police Department I found myself
subject to the discrimination & prejudice of Mayor Joseph M.
Destefano of Middletown, N.Y. himself. A friend, and I went
out to eat at a restaurant in Middletown, N.Y. which is
owned by the Mayor, and to our surprise he appeared from
nowhere and asked us to leave. When we inquired as to why he
stated that officials of the Middletown Police Department
told him not to let us patronize his establishment. Mind you
that this goes without incident. As I stand for the people,
God-Willing, I would pray that the same people wouldn't
hesitate to stand for me. If these unjust & heinous actions
are tolerated & allowed to be done to me without recourse,
then no one is safe. Just as Huewy P Newton of the Black
Panther Party stated that police are in the white community
to protect & serve, yet occupy ours like a foreign troop...
I tell you that we shouldn't fall victim to the conditioning
of feeling inferior or fearful at the presence of law
enforcement for no apparent reason.]]
With that being said, I was not arrested by federal agents.
I was taken in by a squad from the City of Middletown,
N.Y.'s Police Department. I was not being held in an
"undisclosed location" so to speak. I was actually being
held in the Orange County Jail in Goshen, N.Y. However, from
the time that I was booked at the precinct, to standing
before a Judge the next day who told me to come back in 7
more, to being processed at the Orange County Jail and up
until 7 days later I was not permitted to make any calls to
notify anyone of my status; as though I had just been
kidnapped from of the street.
Unfortunately, until this day my family hasn't been fully
abreast of my situation as I haven't had the opportunity to
properly consult with any of them. Dr. Randy Short who
notified Press TV of my situation is a close comrade of mine
who was on our delegation in Libya. Media reports from Press
TV about my situation were not intended to create
controversy. In reality, I have a few associates that are
affiliated with this reputable International media outlet,
and they had expected to meet with me in Iran. So when I
disappeared, and rumors spread, the inability to get concise
information from a credible source prompted them to rouse
public attention on my behalf, for which I am grateful. In
April of 2012 I had the opportunity to be a guest
analyst/contributor on Press TV. This network has a large
following all over the world, and millions find it's news,
documentaries and programming to be both an educational, and
insightful alternative to the conglomerated, and highly
biased mainstream American & British news media. Regarding
the Source magazine, nothing that they published was vetted
by me, and was made by persons, at best, vaguely familiar
with my situation. Further, I have never had an affiliation
or relationship with The Source, nor have they ever directly
consulted with me about anything.

MEXICO CITY - The police here arrested two men on murder and
robbery charges on Monday in the beating death last week of
Malcolm Shabazz, the grandson of Malcolm X, though many
questions about the case remained unresolved.

The men taken into custody, David Hernandez Cruz and Manuel
Alejandro Perez de Jesus, worked as waiters at the Palace
Club, a downtown bar where Mr. Shabazz, 28, was beaten, in
what the city prosecutor called a dispute over an excessive
bill.
Two other bar employees who the authorities said
participated in the beating, which left Mr. Shabazz with
fatal skull, jaw and rib fractures, were being sought.
The body of Mr. Shabazz, who for years had wrestled with
living in the shadow of his grandfather's fame, was still at
a city morgue on Monday while American consular officials
worked to have it returned to the United States. A family
spokeswoman said they would have no comment, and no funeral
plans have been announced.
Mr. Shabazz arrived in Mexico City from Tijuana, the
prosecutor, Rodolfo Fernando Rios Garza, said at a news
conference. He went to the bar on Thursday with a man whom
friends identified as Miguel Suarez, a Mexican labor
activist whom Mr. Shabazz had befriended in the United
States and who had been recently deported.
When the argument over the tab broke out around 3 a.m. as
they prepared to leave, the two were separated by bar
employees, but, for reasons the prosecutor said had not yet
been determined, only Mr. Shabazz was beaten. A blunt object
was used but no other details were given.
Mr. Shabazz's companion was taken to another part of the bar
and robbed but said he managed to escape and call for help.
The pair disputed a tab that came to around $1,200, Mr. Rios
Garza said. Two young women had approached them on the
street and invited them to the bar, but although Mexican
newspapers have identified the bar as a known brothel, Mr.
Rios Garza waved off questions regarding prostitution. Many
of the bars in that rundown area charge customers for even a
conversation with their female employees, according to
Mexican news reports.
Mr. Shabazz consumed several drinks; a prosecutor's office
statement said he had a blood alcohol concentration more
than three times the legal limit for driving in most
American jurisdictions. But the prosecutor, while not
offering details on how much liquor was consumed, said the
bill was excessive and was part of the effort to rob Mr.
Shabazz and his companion.
He said he found no evidence that race or any motive other
than robbery was in play, and there was no indication that
the attackers knew Mr. Shabazz came from a famous family.
The investigation, however, has had its stumbles.
There were security cameras in the bar, but after a search
of the property two days after the attack, video recording
equipment was missing and the cameras were turned toward the
walls, the prosecutor's statement said. It was unclear why
the search was delayed, but justice reform advocates have
long complained that Mexican investigators do not always
move with the speed and forensic acumen of the police in the
United States.
The police have interviewed Mr. Suarez, who could not be
reached for comment.
Mr. Shabazz was 12 when he set a fire in Yonkers that killed
his grandmother, Betty Shabazz. After serving prison time,
he walked an erratic path away from his troubled youth.
He had gone to Mexico City with Mr. Suarez with plans to
draw media attention to his deportation, Mr. Suarez said on
Facebook.
