PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 3rd, 2002

The Coalition for a Just Cincinnati urges the city to settle with the victims of police violence.

Cincinnati -- The Coalition for a Just Cincinnati (CJC) urges the City of Cincinnati and any other named defendants to immediately settle all lawsuits and/or arbitrations resulting from alleged acts of police violence or infringement of civil rights, involving the following plaintiffs:
· The family of Roger Owensby Jr.;
· The family of Michael Carpenter;
· The family of Timothy Thomas;
· Christine Jones, Mary Ann Meredith and other alleged victims who accuse police of wrongly shooting them with beanbags either during the April 2001 unrest or the 'drive-by' beanbag shootings that took place on April 14, 2001;
· Parties named to receive settlements, in the recently concluded "Collaborative Agreement," filed in United States District Court, Southern District of Ohio, Western Division, on the Racial Profiling lawsuit (Case No. C-1-99-317). (See section VII, p. 28-29.)

The Coalition for a Just Cincinnati will stay its course until real change begins in Cincinnati. The CJC also wishes to clarify that, contrary to the Cincinnati Enquirer article of Saturday April 27, 2002, the CJC will not meet with other boycott groups unless Stonewall Cincinnati a local, gays rights group, which has also called for boycotts and sanctions against the City, is welcome and present. Furthermore, we do not believe that we should weed out some of our demands, and negotiate with each other first, before the city is ready to agree to a structure for resolving the boycott. The CJC does congratulate the Cincinnati Black United Front, the Coalition of Concerned Citizens for Justice, and Stonewall Cincinnati for all of their efforts to highlight the problems of the City and its treatment of its citizens, and urges each group to continue with their efforts.

Due to the health problems of our chair, the Reverend James W. Jones, the Coalition for a Just Cincinnati has elected, on April 29th, 2002, three co-chairs to serve in his absence. They are Amanda E. Mayes, Nathaniel Livingston, Jr. and Linda Newman. The Coalition for a Just Cincinnati has called for a boycott on all tourism and conventions, and asks that all performers not come to Cincinnati until serious progress is made in the areas of racial and ecomonic equality. Please see our website, www.cincyboycott.org for our list of demands
