Imam Jamil al-Amin: Symbol of Islam in America
"Truly Pharoah elevated himself in the
land and divided its people into sections,
depressing a group among them: their sons he slew,
but he kept alive their females: For he was
indeed an
evil-liver. And we wished to be Gracious to
those
who were being depressed in the land, to
make them leaders (in faith) and make them heirs,
to
establish a firm place for them in the land, and to show
Pharoah, Haman, and their hosts what they were
dreading from them. (The Qur'an, 28:3-6)
These Qur'anic verses are from Imam Jamil al-Amin's statement at
his
extradition hearing on April 21, 2000. In his statement, he gave the
message
to his oppressors and to the people of America. With help from the
words of
the Qur'an, he wrote an outline history of oppression in America. He
concluded with his now famous words: "I demand unconditional release!
O
Muslims, have I delivered the message? O Allah, have I delivered the
message?"
(Jamaat al-Muslimeen has sent the statement to the printers to be put
into a
brochure for widespread distribution.)
Inshallah, in January 2001, Jamaat al-Muslimeen is starting
a
nationwide campaign for the release of Imam Jamil al-Amin. This
campaign will
be carried out in coordination with Imam Jamil's community
representatives,
including his personal aide Imam Khalil (North Carolina), Imam Bilal
Sunni
Ali (Georgia) and his activist wife Sis. Karima al-Amin and others,
inshallah.
We are against haphazard and fragmented actions which can prove
divisive in such a sensitive situation.
WARNING AGAINST LACK OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
We urge the supporters of the Imam to donate only to those funds
where
there is accounting and surety that the money will reach the JUSTICE
FUND set
up for the purpose. Those who go around collecting money for the Imam
Jamil
Fund without ever disclosing how much they collected, how much they
spent on
"administrative expenses" and how much they gave to the Justice Fund
should
be treated with caution. Such random activities can bring discredit to
the
entire effort of support for the Imam. Those who collect should
publish
their accounts and make their accounts available to the Ummah.
(Jamaat al-Muslimeen has not been collecting for the Imam. In spite of
not
collecting, we have received funds and passed them on. A donation of
$300
which we got as cash was sent and then another $100 out of our zakat
fund.
Inshallah, we will now make a serious effort to collect. All monies
received
will be published in NEW TREND on page 6.)
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:
1. SIGN THE MILLION SIGNATURES PETITION. When you have a thousand
signatures,
send them to us and we will collect and send them to the government.
2. Invite our speakers to your community. You must provide travelling
expenses and a place to stay for one night.
3. Distribute New Trend, the voice of the oppressed, in your area.
4. Allow us to fund raise for the Imam's defense. DONATIONS MUST
INDICATE THE
FOLLOWING:
i. Are they for publicity, mobilization, organization?
ii. Are they for Imam's community, its legal defense, security, family
needs
and related issues?
We will issue receipts for each donation (or at mosques, group of
donations).

CAN WE MAKE THIS AN INTERNATIONAL ISSUE?:
We have some capability here owing to the existence of Jamaat
al-Muslimeen in:
1. Bangladesh
2. Northern Nigeria
3. Yoruba areas of Nigeria
4. Ghana
5. Uganda
6. Mali
7. U.K.
We also urge Muslims in all Islamic movements, PALESTINAN, KASHMIRI,
CHECHNYAN, SUDANESE, FILIPINO, AFGHAN, PAKISTANI to speak out for the
release
of Imam Jamil al-Amin.
WE URGE THE GOVERNMENT OF IRAQ TO PAY ATTENTION TO OPPRESSION WITHIN
AMERICA.
WHY SHOULD IT BE AN INTERNATIONAL ISSUE:
1. The issue of Imam Jamil's suffering is an issue in the worldwide
issue of
human rights and freedom for dissidents.
2. His arrest shows that the USA is waging a war against Islam and all
independent forces and groups.
3. USA's double standard of interfering in Muslim countries while
keeping
silent about its oppression of its own people must be challenged for
attainment of balance in international relations
4. Independent Islam groups in America need the support of the Muslim
world
so that USA should not be able to use its puppet Muslim groups to
infiltrate
the Muslim world.
