From the editor's Diary
Little Known Facts about Hadith: Written during my stay in Georgia.
May 19: There is a narrative in Sahih Bukhari about the age
of Ayesha, r.a., when she married the Prophet, pbuh. This
narrative has prompted some Muslims to support child
marriages. It has also attracted abusive attacks on the
Prophet, pbuh, from non-Muslims, Pervaizis and Ismailis.
Most people do not know that the narrative about the age of
Ayesha, r.a., is NOT a hadith. For a narrative to be a
hadith, it should reach the Prophet, pbuh, with an unbroken
chain of narrators, or at least quote the Prophet, pbuh,
directly or indirectly.
The narrative about Ayesha's, r.a., age is not from the
Prophet, pbuh. In fact, there is absolutely no hadith from
the Prophet, pbuh, himself, which gives her age.
Also, the Prophet, pbuh, never mentioned Ayesha's, r.a., age
in ANY of his hadith which were about her. Nor did he ever
assign a specific age for marriage.
So, for decades Muslims have been wrangling with non-Muslims
about a "hadith" which is not a hadith. We Muslims often do
not study hadith and we make this blunder.
Imam Bukhari himself does not claim that all the narratives
in his Sahih are from the Prophet, pbuh. In fact his own
tafseer, in the form of segment headings, some pf them
brilliant, are part of the Sahih.
Others who attack hadith do not know that Hadith were NOT
narrated by Bukhari. He collected hadith narrated by sahaba,
r.a.,
So is the narrative about the age of Ayesha, r.a.,
fabricated by Ismailis and others who hated her and wanted
to reduce her importance? It is possible but there is no
evidence that it was fabricated. Most probably it was some
later day narrator's opinion or rumor which was linked to
the name of Ayesha, r.a.
It should be noted that Bukhari's collection is at least 98%
correct and authenticated [sahih] which has no equal in
human writings. Only the Qur'an is 100% correct.

Muslim Outrage Over Imam Khalif Latif (and Other Propagators of Lies on Boko Haram)
May 19, 2014 at 3:14pm
By Nadrat Siddique
Special to the New Trend
I noticed large numbers of repostings of a Huffington Post piece on the putative kidnapping of schoolgirls by Boko Haram. Muslims and non-Muslims alike seem to view the Huffington Post as an authority on Africa, Islam, and on Boko Haram, a Muslim organization with deep-seated roots in Nigeria. Here is the link, along with some initial musings on it:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/imam-khalid-latif/muslim-outrage-boko-haram_b_5279101.html?utm_hp_ref=fb&src=sp&comm_ref=false
Being the daughter of a journalism professor, the first question I ask upon reading a piece on a controversial topic is: Who is the author, what are his
political affiliations, and to whom is he financially ingratiated? Imam Khalid Latif, the writer of the Huffington Post piece has quite a resume. New York Mayor Bloomberg selected him—of all New York City residents—to fill the position of NYPD Muslim chaplain. Previously he was Muslim chaplain at one of the most racist and war-policy formulating institutions in the country—Princeton University. And—according to his self-description—he offers his services to the State Department. The State Department is the entity bombing Muslims all over Africa. So, from the gecko, I'd take anything he said about Africa with a grain of salt.
The piece begins with a misplaced parallel. Latif, in his infinite empathy for Muslim women, lists the various tragic situations of Muslimahs he's encountered in the course of his work as a chaplain: Rape and molestation victims, abused wife, resistor of an arranged marriage who was beaten, and so on. These likely occur in the U.S., where his work as chaplain is centered. The pertinence of such experiences, however heartrending (and I say that as a Muslim woman who has personally endured several of the situations listed), is irrelevant to a very specific and complicated situation in Nigeria, and seems at best a mudslinging campaign (sling enough mud, and some of it, however irrelevant, will stick).
A few paragraphs into the piece, he engages in an outright (but cleverly worded) fabrication on the philosophy of Boko Haram:
"Education is a basic right in Islam, regardless of what the Boko Haram believe. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, has said that 'Seeking knowledge is compulsory on every Muslim'.. Boko Haram's ideology is attacking this God-given right."
But Boko Haram's statements make it very clear they are not against all education, only Western-style education, which they view as indoctrination in
jahiliyyah. In other words, their efforts are geared at preventing the mental colonization of their people. This is not unusual, and most movements against imperialism and colonialism/ neo-colonialism—from the Algerian anti-colonial movements, to the Lakota Sioux to the Taliban—have historically resisted the educational institutions of the invading/ colonizing power. The attribution of blanket anti-education sentiment to the group is dishonest and furtherance of propaganda against a group targeted for genocide by the puppet government and its masters (the military powers seeking to recolonize Nigeria).
Saying "no" to Western-style education is a bulwark against cultural imperialism and the amplification of Western corporate presence in Nigeria—and
by extension all of West Africa, since many of the largest and most influential African universities are located in Nigeria. From the imperialist standpoint, this threatens Western corporate interests, providing a measure of protection for Nigeria from junk goods typically dumped into Third World nations, whose valuable resources--oil, diamonds, petroleum, and the like—are then extricated. Islamically-educated girls and women are not ideal customers for useless garbage such as hose, high heels, and mini-skirts.
Saying "no" to Western style education also creates a mind-set which challenges Western nihilism. Gay marriage, pornography, pedophilia, premarital
sex, and identification with the oppressor become a hard sell, as desensitization is avoided.
Another question no one, including Latif, has asked is: Why, in a region which is the wellspring of the most renowned, powerful, and influential centers
of learning--those established by the Muslim Kingdoms of Timbuktu, Mali, Ghana, and others--an alien education with no relevance to African or Muslim peoples is needed. The spectacle of Michelle Obama and the #Saveourgirls campaign endeavoring to reinstate the "right" to a superior education—in their view, one that is not Afrocentric nor Islamic—to poor, ignorant Africans is classic cultural imperialism .
As a group opposing Western-style education, what are the characteristics of Boko Haram? Are they fundamentalists? If they are, would they permit the kidnapping or rape of young girls? Fundamentalists are known for their exceedingly strict moral codes; avoidance of pre-marital sex; "shot-gun weddings" in cases where a man has even associated closely with a woman, let alone had sexual relations with her; and for embrace of children born out of any union. They do not stand for the abandoning of raped mothers with children in the countryside, as the Western media bizarrely claims. So, either the group is, or it isn't fundamentalist. The practiced and professional liars of corporate media need to decide on one fabrication and stick with it. The continual vacillation in the story is exposing their lack of basic journalistic integrity. And the story they tell is beginning to resound of the incubator babies story--preposterous and far-fetched, yet swallowed by the American masses--concocted by the U.S. to justify the first invasion of Iraq. At some point, the American public must wake up and realize that Western militaries and AFRICOM will lie through their teeth to eliminate or discredit any group which gets in the way of their military designs.
On a journalistic level, Latif, like most Western journalists covering the Boko Haram story, does not ask the key question which bears asking: When has Whitey ever cared about Africans? Why is a White Supremacist government suddenly concerned about Nigerian girls to the extent of investing U.S.
military assets there? How is it that all the nations standing with the U.S. in the effort are members of AFRICOM? Is it possible that this is an
imperialist pretext to cement U.S. military bases in and around Nigeria (and West Africa in general)? Finally, are the kidnappings fact or fiction? If they are fact and not fabrication, why does the numbers of girls ostensibly kidnapped, released, and remaining in custody in the storyline propounded by the puppet government, its masters, and their propaganda arms—fluxuate like a pendulum daily? How is it that a tiny group of at most 40 Boko Haram could walk into a town like Chibok, seize the girls who were on their home turf (surrounded by their families, teachers, village elders, etc), and depart with the girls in tow, without any resistance from the families, teachers, etc.? Suppose a kidnapping did occur (I'm not contending it didn't occur at all, but rather that the manner in which its being reported and the blame ascribed are highly suspect), what is the certainty that it was carried out by Boko Haram? It is a classic imperialist strategy to engage in all manner of war crimes, and then blame the victim. This was done to the FIS in Algeria; to the Taliban massacred by Dostum; to Iraqis murdered by U.S. forces; to young Black men murdered in Baltimore, New York, Oakland, and elsewhere murdered by U.S. police, and others. If the stage on which this story is being told, was instead a court of law, the storytellers would be thrown out of court for lack of credibility.
One thing we can be sure of: Boko Haram is hated by, and has been massacred by the unwaveringly pro-West Nigerian government in very large numbers. For example:

Letter: Strongly Opposed To New Trend's Reporting on Boko Haram
Yours on Boko Haram has been a source of concern for me of
recent. The activities of Boko Haram in Nigeria can only be
analysed effectively by Nigerians who are witnesses to the
atrocities committed on a daily basis. Boko Haram have
killed innocent Muslims, destroyed the livelihood of the
Muslim community, kidnapped Muslims for ransom, intimidated
Muslims that don't support their ideology, distorted the
image of Islam and the Muslims and destroyed family
relations. I am from Borno and know the activities and
destruction caused by Boko Haram. I am surprised and
flabbergasted by your constant support for Boko Haram and
it's activities. I have told you before to cross check your
sources of information before going to the press from your
former contacts in Borno or Nigeria, but it seems you are
convinced and stand by Boko Haram. All Muslims in Nigeria
have condemned the kidnapped of the Chibok girls by Boko
Haram, but you seems to have a contrary view. The kidnapped
was real and the protest in Abuja and other cities were not
staged managed but held by well meaning Nigerian's both
Muslims and Christians. You can only know the dangers and
atrocities of Boko Haram only if you live in Borno, Yobe, or
Adamawa States. Our people have suffered and continued to
suffer from the activities of Boko Haram and your reportage
of their activities is unfortunate.
It is on the basis of the above that I request you to kindly
remove me from your mailing lists.

Letter: : A different Letter about New Trend on Boko Haram
Asalamu alaikum. Thank you for letting me know what is
really going on with Boko Haram. Believe me, I always scour
the internet for information, knowing that CNN is an example
of corporate media serving the needs of corporations and
corrupt governments. I'll never forget what Elijah Muhammad
said when I was in the Nation: "You cannot even fathom the
depths of their evil." Though, at the time, I thought he
was limiting this to a certain race---I now see it globally.
And it never ceases to amaze me.

Washington's Saudi joker

Saudi Arabia, the world's largest producer and exporter of
oil, on Monday sought to reassure markets by stating that it
is willing to increase the supply of crude if the ongoing
crisis in eastern Ukraine created a shortage.
Hostilities between Ukraine's government and pro-Moscow
militants in several Ukrainian cities over the past few
weeks have heightened tensions in the region and resulted in
one of the worst stand-offs between Russia and the West in
decades, giving rise to worries about the supply of oil from
Russia to Ukraine and Europe, and keeping Brent futures near
$ 108 a barrel, after prices hit an annual high of $ 112.39
on March 3. Russia's state-owned Gazprom, which controls
about a fifth of the world's gas reserves, meets more than
half of Ukraine's gas demands while supplying nearly a third
of Europe's gas each year.
"We are willing to supply any shortage which may arise," Ali
al-Naimi, the Middle Eastern kingdom's petroleum and mineral
resources minister, reportedly said on the sidelines of an
energy conference in Seoul, before adding: "Supply is highly
sufficient. Demand is great. And the market is fairly
stable. There's no reason for a change. Absolutely no
reason."
Tom James, managing director of Navitas Resources in Dubai,
told Bloomberg: "The market is concerned now about Ukraine
and oil rises on that situation," adding: "Without anything
like that, the real picture is softer."
Abdalla El-Badri, secretary general of the Organization of
the Petroleum Exporting Countries, said that the 12-member
group, which pumps about 40 percent of the world's crude,
will maintain production at about 30 million barrels a day
in the near term, Bloomberg reported.

Iran is recruiting Afghan refugees to fight for the regime
in Syria. The WSJ's Farnaz Fassihi on Page One: "Iran has
been recruiting thousands of Afghan refugees to fight in
Syria, offering $500 a month and Iranian residency to help
the Assad regime beat back rebel forces, according to
Afghans and Western officials. The Iranian Revolutionary
Guard Corps, or IRGC, recruits and trains Shiite militias to
fight in Syria. Details of their recruitment efforts were
posted this week on a blog focused on Afghan refugees in
Iran and confirmed by the office of Grand Ayatollah
Mohaghegh Kabuli, an Afghan religious leader in the Iranian
holy city of Qom.
"A member of the IRGC also confirmed the details. 'They
[IRGC] find a connection to the refugee community and work
on convincing our youth to go and fight in Syria,' said the
office administrator of Ayatollah Kabuli, reached by
telephone in Qom. 'They give them everything from salary to
residency.' Iran is offering the refugees school
registration for their children and charity cards in
addition to the $500 stipend and residency. Many Afghan
young men have written to Ayatollah Kabuli to ask whether
fighting in Syria was religiously sanctioned, his office
said. He responded only if they were defending Shiite

even attended funerals of Afghans killed in Syria
Syria
Out Flanking Assad's Highly Fortified Position: Heavy
Fighting continues on May 16.
Syria. Flanking attack on Alawite Assad Army in Layramoun.
20 objects captured
The offensive in the Az-Zahraa neighbourhood, Layramoun (aka
Balleramoun) district, where the Assad regime air force
intelligence and an artillery base are located, continues,
reports Akhbar Sham.
Overnight on 9-10 May, Mujahideen from Jaish al-Muhajireen
wal Ansar/Army of Emigrants and Supporters (AES), the Imam
Bukhari group, Saifullah al-Chechen group, an Uighur group
and several other groups carried out a flanking offensive on
Assad's position.
After a huge burst of firing, the offensive groups went on
the attack. The infidels' fierce resistance was broken by
the determination of the Mujahideen.
Having smashed the next line of defense of the Assadites,
the Mujahideen started to take one target after another. By
morning on 10 May 16 objectives were taken. Earlier,
overnight on 8-9 May, the Mujahideen took 4 houses. In such
way, 20 objectives were taken in 2 nights.
During the day of 10 May, positional fights went on, at
times turning into heavy fire fights. As dusk fell, the
storm group once again went on the attack.
As of midnight on 10-11 May, the Mujahideen took another
major foothold in az-Zahraa. At the time of writing, 7
infidels [Assad's forces] were taken captive. During the
attack 30-50 Assadites were killed. Exact numbers are not
yet known.
It is to be noted that the flanking blow against the
infidels was taken after the Mujahideen had gotten close to
the main base of the Assadites — the air force intelligence
base — which is very heavily defended.
The flanking maneuver and the offensive operation subsequent
to that took the Assadites by surprise, because they were
preparing for a frontal attack. Judging by their radio
transmissions, the infidels called an additional four
warplanes in to help their besieged comrades in Layramoun,
which were used for air attacks against the Mujahideen
positions with the aim of stopping the offensive.
Offensive operation in Layramoun continues.

A woman who invented a wild tale of survival during the
holocaust has been ordered to forfeit the $22.5 million
judgement she won from her publishers by a Massachusetts
court.
Published in 1997, Misha: A Mémoire of the Holocaust Years
is about a Jewish girl from Brussels who walked across
Europe by herself after her parents were seized by
Nazis.
Misha Defonseca, 76, and her ghostwriter Vera Lee won $32.4
million from publisher Jane Daniel and Mt Ivy Press in a
copyright registration claim in 1998 in which Daniel was
found to have conducted 'highly improper representations
and activities.'
Storyteller: Misha Defonseca admitted to making up most of
her memoir about her childhood as a Jewish orphan in
WWII
Daniel appealed, but in 2005 the Massachusetts Appeals Court
upheld the judgement.
However, during the appeal process, inconsistencies in
Defonseca's outlandish tale began to attract the suspicion
of Daniel, journalists, forensic genealogists, reports the
Courthouse News Service.

-
How the Queen Mother did her bit during the Great War as a
14-year-old when her family's estate was turned into a
convalescent home for wounded soldiers
In her memoir, Defonseca wrote that she trekked 1,900 miles
across Europe in search of her parents. She spent months
living in the forest with a pack of wolves, hiding from
Nazis and in one encounter, stabbed a Nazi rapist to
death.
These events all occurred when she was aged between seven
and 11 years old, according to the book.
Following her trial loss, Daniel set out to determine
whether Defonseca's tale was truthful.
She eventually located a document that included Defonseca's
maiden name - which in the book was Levy - and her date and
place of birth.
One of the pack: In her memoir, Defonseca wrote that she
lived for a time with a pack of wolves while hiding from
Nazis
Her real name, Daniel found, was Monica Ernestine Josephine
De Wael, and she was not Jewish.
During the time she was supposed to have been communing with
wolves and killing Nazis, Defonseca was in actual fact
enrolled in a Brussels school.
Defonseca, now living in Massachusetts, has admitted that
her best-selling book was an elaborate fantasy she kept
repeating, even as the book was translated into 18
languages and made into a feature film in France.
'This story is mine. It is not actually reality, but my
reality, my way of surviving,' Defonseca said in a
statement given by her lawyers to The Associated Press.
'I ask forgiveness to all who felt betrayed. I beg you to
put yourself in my place, of a four-year-old girl who was
very lost,' the statement said.
She admitted that her parents were arrested when she was
four and she was taken care of by her grandfather and
uncle.
Bestseller: The book was not a huge hit in the U.S. but sold
millions in Canada and Europe
Defonseca said she was poorly treated by her adopted family,
called a 'daughter of a traitor' because of her parents'
role in the resistance, which she said led her to 'feel
Jewish.'
She said there were moments when she 'found it difficult to
differentiate between what was real and what was part of my
imagination.'
Defonseca had been asked to write the book by publisher Jane
Daniel in the 1990s, after Daniel heard the writer tell the
story in a Massachusetts synagogue.
Daniel and Defonseca fell out over profits received from the
best-selling book, which led to a lawsuit. In 2005, a Boston
court ordered Daniel to pay Defonseca and her ghost writer
Vera Lee $32.4 million, of which Defonseca received $22.5
million.
In 2012, the Superior Court found that Defonseca had
committed a fraud and set aside the verdict. She appealed
and on April 29, Judge Marc Kantrowitz, in what he
described as 'the third, and hopefully the last' opinion on
the matter, agreed that the truth of Defonseca's story would
have made a difference to the jury's deliberations.
Judge Kantrowitz noted that Defonseca and Daniel had both
acted 'highly inappropriately,' and expressed the Court's
hope that 'the saga has now come to an end,' reports
Mondaq.
