Dr Kaukab Siddique | Editor-in-Chief Rajab 27,1434/June 7, 2013 # 24

Owing to Isra wa al-Mairaj, Prophet Muhammad's, pbuh, heavenly journey, we are publishing this issue early. Hence certain items are delayed to the next issue, inshallah.

Three items about Syria.
News: June 5.
  1. Lebanese Hizbullah and Syrian military captured the border town of Qusair after three weeks of heavy fighting. Overwhelming force was directed at the mujahideen defending the city but the Islamic defenders withdrew in good order with their weapons. Lyce Doucet of the BBC has given an inside view of the city after the Islamic withdrawal. It is a deserted city. The people did not wait to welcome the "liberators." About 1500 civilians are lying wounded in the city owing to indiscriminate bombing and raiding by Assad's tanks and jets. Hizbullah suffered heavy losses but turned out to be good fighters and came in large numbers.

  2. In a clever diversion, the mujahideen overran the Quneitra crossing connecting Syria with the Israeli occupied Golan heights. Syrian military reacted with a heavy tank and artillery attack and forced the fighters to withdraw. Israeli media expressed concern that if the mujahideen take the crossing they would attack Israel. {In effect Assad is defending Israel- Editor]

  3. Fighting continued all along the Damascus front, in six different suburbs. Here Assad's forces are unable to advance. Countrywide, mujahudeen remain in control of large swathes of territory, although now Assad can escape via Qusair.

Afghanistan: June 6. In the latest Taliban attack in Helmand province, five NATO troops were killed. These were from European Georgia. [Fox News TV.]

Pakistan: Give the People their Rights.

June 5: Syed Munawar Hasan, Islamic leader of JI, urged Pakistanis not to let General Musharraf escape the ultimate fate. Musharraf assaulted the Red Mosque, had top Baluchi leader Bugti murdered, "disappeared" countless dissenters and handed over Pakistan to US intelligence services, Munawar Hasan said.
Liaqat Baluch and Farid Piracha, two upper echelon leaders of Jamaate Islami, have called on the newly elected government to carry out economic reforms and lighten the burden of the poor. They called for normalcy in electricity and restoration of the legal rights of the poor masses and the introduction of official business in Urdu instead of English so people can understand official business..

June 6, Turkey's Islamic leader Erdogan returned from Africa to a huge welcome while the secular crowds continue their rallies.. Looks like he will put up a fight against elements instigated by the US, Israel and Iran to bring him down. A report we have indicates the greatest danger to Erdogan is from his within his party, propelled by a movement led by a man named Gulen with a huge Sufi following.. With the help of Br. Kurter, we have indicated quite a few times that Gulen makes CAIR look like a bunch of saints. He lives on a 10-hectare estate in the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania at the behest, this report says, of the CIA. Please scroll down to this astonishing report. Go to end.

Yusuf Ali's blunder.
ISRA wal MAIRAJ: Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) Journey to Jerusalem & High Heavens
Israelis and Pervaizis deny the Journey & target the Mosque

by Kaukab Siddique

The Qur'an refers to the mystic journey of Muhammad (peace be on him) to Masjid al-Aqsa. The Hadith tells us that this was the mosque in Jerusalem which Muhammad (pbuh) reached in a miraculous journey by night. From this mosque, he had his Ascension or Mairaj during which he was taken through seven heavenly dimensions to the "Presence" of Allah Almighty.

The Hadith is rich in its metaphorical descriptions of Paradise and Hell which were "shown" to Muhammad (peace be on him) during his Ascension.
The Mairaj is also connected with the finalization of the FIVE DAILY PRAYERS for Muslims.

Just about every little detail in the Hadith about Isra and Mairaj is of extreme importance for Muslims, including the fact that the Prophet (pbuh) had taken refuge in a woman's home from where he began his trip when he was granted the audience with Allah Almighty.

Just about every great Islamic thinker, writer, scholar has written about the significance of this unique journey BEYOND SPACE and TIME, some of the most powerful poetry on the subject coming from Allama Iqbal who was seminally touched by the power of the HADITH of the Prophet (pbuh).

In our times, ZIONIST ISRAEL has tried to deny the validity of the Prophet's journey. International Jewry and crazies among evangelical Christians want to destroy the mosque. In a recent expression of hate, President Bush's "adviser" Daniel Pipes claimed that there was no Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem and it had been built later by an Ummayed king! Such distortions about the THIRD MOST SACRED ISLAMIC site indicate that International Jewry and Islam are dead set on a collision course. Masjid al-Aqsa today is under Jewish occupation as is all of Palestine Islamic scholars say, it is the sacred duty of every Muslim in the world to liberate Jerusalem, purify the Mosque of the abuse it has endured and to drive the Jews out of Palestine.

[Islam has no quarrel with Jews who want to live as a peaceful minority in Palestine as they did for centuries under Islamic rule. Military occupation, however, will be removed by military force, as history shows.]

From among the Muslims, the western powers have produced a secularized elite who deny the authenticity of Hadith. These brainwashed potential COLLABORATORS have also started spreading the claim that Masjid al-Aqsa is not in Jerusalem.

The confusion arises because the Jews refer to the Mosque as "the Temple." The Qur'an refers only to the MASJID (or Mosque) and not to any Temple. The secularized Muslims are confused because they do not read the Quranic verses after the reference to Masjid al-Aqsa. Hence They DO NOT see the second reference to the Masjid in the same chapter of the Qur'an.

See Sura 17, verse 1 and verse 7. Both mention "masjid." Yusuf Ali generated confusion by translating the second reference to "masjid" as "temple." That was a serious blunder.
When the Muslims took Jerusalem, there was no "Temple" there and they built the Mosque at the sacred site of the original prayer area [masjid] from which Muhammad (pbuh) ascended into the heavens and to which he returned. The later building of a mosque on the SITE OF THE MAIRAJ by an Ummayad ruler was not a new mosque but a restoration of the mosque mentioned in the Qur'an and the Hadith.

The Prophet, pbuh, needed three essential aspects to fulfil his mission. These were connected with the Isra wa al-Mairaj. Plese scroll down all the way to Br. Shamim Siddiqui's important article on this issue.

North London mosque burnt down by British White Supremacists on June 4

The EdL reportedly did this act of hate in response to the killing of British elite guard in London by a Nigerian Muslim who used a cleaver and then proclaimed to all and sundry that if you kill our people, we'll kill yours. [Almost verbatim the words of Osama bin Laden]

This center was used for prayer by Somalis, who being Black was confused by the Brits with the Nigerian who is also Black.

One country, two religions and three very telling pictures: The empty pews at churches just yards from an overcrowded mosque
By Guy Walters

Set aside the fact that our Queen is the Defender of the Christian Faith. Ignore the 26 Church of England bishops who sit in the House of Lords.
Pay no attention to the 2011 Census that told us 33.2?million people in England and Wales describe themselves as Christians.
For if you want a more telling insight into religion in the United Kingdom today, just look at these photographs. The story they tell is more revealing than any survey.
St Mary's, Cable Street HUNDREDS OF WORSHIPPERS GATHER FOR FRIDAY PRAYERS AT THE BRUNE STREET MOSQUE
The photo on the left shows St Mary's Church in Cable Street while the photo on the right shows worshippers gathered for Friday midday prayers outside a nearby mosque in Spitalfields, both in East London

What they show are three acts of worship performed in the East End of London within a few hundred yards of each other at the end of last month.

Two of the photos show Sunday morning services in the churches of St George-in-the-East on Cannon Street Road, and St Mary's on Cable Street.

The third shows worshippers gathered for Friday midday prayers outside the nearby mosque on the Brune Street Estate in Spitalfields.

The difference in numbers could hardly be more dramatic. At St George's, some 12 people have congregated to celebrate Holy Communion.
Empty pews: 18th-century parishioners crowded into St George-in-the-East hear John Wesley. Only 12 people attended the service

When the church was built in the early 18th century, it was designed to seat 1,230.

Numbers are similar at St Mary's, opened in October 1849. Then, it could boast a congregation of 1,000. Today, as shown in the picture, the worshippers total just 20.
While the two churches are nearly empty, the Brune Street Estate mosque has a different problem — overcrowding.

The mosque itself is little more than a small room rented in a community centre, and it can hold only 100.

However, on Fridays, those numbers swell to three to four times the room's capacity, so the worshippers spill out onto the street, where they take up around the same amount of space as the size of the near-empty St Mary's down the road.
Dwindling flock: St Mary's Cable Street in East London was built to hold 1,000 people. Today, the congregation numbers around 20

What these pictures suggest is that, on current trends, Christianity in this country is becoming a religion of the past, and Islam is one of the future.

In the past ten years, there has been a decrease in people in England and Wales identifying as Christian, from 71.7 per cent to 59.3 per cent of the population.

In the same period the number of Muslims in England and Wales has risen from 3 per cent of the population to 4.8 per cent — 2.7 million people.

And Islam has age on its side. Whereas a half of British Muslims are under 25, almost a quarter of Christians are approaching their eighth decade.

It is estimated that in just 20 years, there will be more active Muslims in this country than churchgoers — an idea which even half a century ago would have been utterly unthinkable.

Many will conclude with a heavy heart that Christianity faces a permanent decline in Britain, its increasingly empty churches a monument to those centuries when the teachings of Christ governed the thoughts and deeds of the masses.

On Sunday October 1, 1738, St George's was packed twice during the day to hear the great evangelist John Wesley, who then preached at the church for the following week explaining, as he put it, 'the way of salvation to many who misunderstood what had been preached concerning it'.

Today, there are no John Wesleys to fill up the pews. The church does its best, offering, for example, a monthly 'Hot Potato Sunday', during which the few congregants can discuss the readings of the day over a baked potato.

Canon Michael Ainsworth of St George's puts on a brave face when he says: 'What we are saying now is it is not just a matter of numbers. It is about keeping faith with the city and hanging in there — being part of the community.'

At St Mary's, meanwhile, Rev Peter McGeary cannot explain why the numbers are so low: 'It's impossible to say, there are so many variables.'

When he is asked if he tries to boost his congregations, he simply replies: 'We are not a company, we are a church.'

In contrast, there seems a remarkable energy attached to the mosque on Brune Street, which has been described as the 'Mecca of the City'.

Here, come rain or shine, members of the Bangladeshi community perform the Friday prayer of Jumma under the open sky. It is a communal act which will surely only grow in popularity.

Sadly, that's not something that can be said of the two nearby churches, and unless they can reinvigorate their congregations they may finally end up being deconsecrated.

When that happens, such large buildings will be attractive spaces for those who can fill them.

One day, in a few decades, St George's may well again be packed with worshippers — but they will not be Christians.

US Identifies Libyan in North Waziristan as Key bomb maker+Attack in Peshawar
[Excerpted from AFP via Dawn daily.]

June 5. WASHINGTON: The US Treasury identified a Libyan electronics and explosives specialist on Wednesday as a top bomb maker for al Qaeda in Pakistan and singled him out for anti-terror sanctions.

The Treasury said Abd al-Hamid al-Masli, also known as Hamza al-Darnawi, runs an al Qaeda workshop in Pakistan that provides improvised explosive devices and components for al Qaeda to be used in Afghanistan.

The 37-year-old Libyan-born Masli works in Waziristan on Pakistan's northwest border, where he also has instructed al Qaeda recruits on making detonators.

"As of 2009, was personally in charge of IED component construction at the (al Qaeda) electronics workshop" and in 2011 he was a member of the group's military committee, the Treasury said in a statement.

TURKEY IN TURMOIL Et tu, Gul? Then fall, Erdogan By M K Bhadrakumar

One thing that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said before pushing ahead on Tuesday with a four-day tour of the Maghreb tour still hangs suspended in the air. Hardly anyone picked it up. He said Turkish intelligence is looking into possible links between the recent incidents in Istanbul, scene of violently suppressed protests, and foreign elements.
Erdogan hinted that some leads are already available with the Turkish intelligence. "Our intelligence work is ongoing. It is not possible to reveal their names. But we will have meetings with their heads."

His words suggested that there might have been concerted foreign

interference. Logically, the eyes turn toward Damascus, Tehran and Baghdad. But then, Erdogan also blamed Twitter for inciting unrest. He said,

There is now a menace, which is called Twitter. The best examples of lies can be found there. To me, social media is the worst menace to society.

The regimes in Syria, Baghdad and Iran should be out of their minds to dabble in the US-controlled social media as instruments of their regional policies. Besides, the reactions of the three countries to the Turkish unrest are conspicuously reticent under the current circumstances of intense mutual hostility, and quite apparently they have been taken by surprise that the ground beneath the feet of the Sultan in Istanbul could shift just like that.

Straws in the wind What stands out in sharp contrast is the shrill, intrusive reaction of the United States. Washington has so far made six statements regarding the unrest in Turkey through the past five-day period since May 31, mostly at the level of the White House. These statements have been highly critical of Erdogan.

They viewed the protests as peaceful acts by ordinary law-abiding citizens exercising their rights to free expression. They expressed concern about the government's response to the protesters and "expected" Ankara to work through the issue while "respecting its [Turkey's] citizens' rights".

The White House considered that the Turkish government resorted to excessive use of force and called for the events to be investigated. Secretary of State John Kerry added that the Obama administration is "deeply concerned" by the large number of people who have been injured. Kerry said:

We are concerned by the reports of excessive use of force by police. We obviously hope there will be a full investigation of those incidents and full restraint from the police force with respect to those incidents. We urge all people involved ... to avoid any provocations or violence.

The US has taken up the matter with the Turkish government through diplomatic channels.

Indeed, something is strange in this overreaction, and it is not only as regards the disproportionate and harsh US pronouncements - considering that Erdogan and President Barack Obama had some special chemistry between them - but also because the US reaction looks suspiciously defensive.

These are early days, and firm conclusions cannot yet be made as to what exactly is happening in Turkey. However, there are straws in the wind.

Hereby hangs a tale No sooner had Erdogan's jet taken off from the Essenboga airport on his scheduled trip to North Africa than Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc visited the presidential palace in Ankara to meet President Abdullah Gul. The two leaders thereupon publicly took a radically different approach than Erdogan's to the ongoing unrest.

Erdogan had summarily dismissed the protesters as "ideologically" motivated hoodlums with links to foreign powers and had no word of regret for the police excesses. Arinc, on the contrary, acknowledged that the original protesters were "right and legitimate" and the police methods were brutal, for which he even apologized. Indeed, he has since agreed to meet the protesters on Wednesday.

Again, Erdogan was harsh on the opposition Republican People's Party for inciting the protests, whereas Gul received its leader at the presidential palace for a discussion.

Erdogan argues that he won a handsome mandate in the last parliamentary poll, which gave him the prerogative to implement his programs, but Gul contradicts him that democracy is about more than holding elections.

To be sure, the secularists and liberals and the Kemalist camp have promptly greeted Gul as more conciliatory, more receptive to democratic ideals and generally more pro-Western than Erdogan.

Curiously, Erdogan, Gul and Arinc are being described in the same breath as the "founding fathers" of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), although Turks all over would know that Erdogan is as peerless as any sultan in their history.

And the intriguing part is that this characterization of an AKP "Troika" is the handiwork of the Zaman newspaper. Of course, Zaman is run by the followers of the hugely powerful faith-based Fetullah Gulen movement. Hereby hangs a tale.

Paragon of 'moderate' Islam Although the Gulen movement had supported the Islamist AKP's march to power, a distance had developed between Erdogan and Gulen in recent years. Erdogan has been plainly indifferent toward Gulen and averse to submitting to him. In contrast, after meeting Gulen recently, Arinc showered praise on him in a TV interview and pointedly called him as " Hocaefendi", a title that his followers use for him. Arinc said Gulen is the "conscience of 75 million people" in Turkey.

Arinc's meeting with Gulen took place in Philadelphia during Erdogan's recent visit to the US, but the prime minister himself kept away.

Now, all this may seem out of context unless one has the background of Gulen, who heads one of the most influential movements in the Islamic world and which is regarded as drawing on the moderate mystical traditions of Sufism. He fled Turkey in 1999 amid accusations of plotting to overthrow the secular government at that time and has been living in exile on a 10-hectare haven in the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania.

According to a well-researched report by the New York Times, his Green Card application shows that Gulen's request to remain in the United States was endorsed by a former top official dealing with the Middle East in the Central Intelligence Agency. [1]

The mystery deepens when it transpires that the CIA's case officer also is an authority on the "Arab Spring" and political Islam, with a long career track specializing in the use of Islam as an instrument of US regional policies.

Suffice to say, Zaman newspaper has opened the heavy artillery on Erdogan and is exhorting Gul and Arinc to take on the mantle of leadership. Zaman commentaries have virtually called for a revolt against Erdogan by AKP stalwarts.

Erdogan faces an existential challenge. The heart of the matter is that he has grown in stature through the past decade in power taking Turkey to unprecedented heights of prosperity and striding the Arab Muslim world as a role model.

In the process, paradoxically, it has also become increasingly difficult for the US to harness his energy. Erdogan has become uncontrollable - be it in his stance on Syria, support for Iraqi Kurdistan, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood, or his visceral hatred toward Israel.

Waving the red flag Woven into all this is also a congruence of interests between the US and Gulen in weakening and destabilizing Erdogan. From Gulen's perspective, Erdogan not only defies him, but is also accelerating a historic compromise with the PKK, a Kurdish group that he is violently opposed to. By the way, a WikiLeaks cable dated 2009 by the then US ambassador to Turkey, James F Jeffrey, assessed that the Gulen movement was strong in the police and security agencies.

Interestingly, Ambassador Jeffrey wrote,

The political context for conversations about Gulen is complicated because President Gul is himself seen by almost all of our contacts as a Gulenist, while Prime Minister Erdogan is not. Indeed, some of our contacts have argued that Erdogan is so firmly outside the Gulen camp that Gulen loyalists view him as a liability. At the same time, the Republican People's Party and other AKP opponents of the ruling Justice and Development Party are quick to accuse the US of working covertly to prop up Gulen, allegedly to weaken Turkey's secular foundation to produce a "model" moderate Islamic nation. [2]

Make no mistake, Turkey's unrest is not going to wither away. Gulen is making his epic move to bring about an "in-house" political coup within the AKP to bring Gul to the fore. Gulen has Washington's support for this "regime change" in Turkey. The Middle East situation has reached a criticality, and who rules Turkey becomes of seminal importance.

But will Erdogan walk into the sunset without a fight? Such meekness wouldn't be the hallmark of a sultan. Marc Champion, editor at Bloomberg, is spot on:

If the president is able to calm the protests before Erdogan returns in three days - as the prime minister says he hopes - Gul will get the credit. If Gul can create a new coalition across the opposition parties, he would be a great choice to lead them and would provide a good change for Turkey. But don't count on it ... Erdogan isn't just a political bruiser. He is a force of nature, and has a genius for turning events to his advantage. The party was built and succeeded around Erdogan's popular appeal, not Gul's. [3]

Meanwhile, the Syrian crisis has introduced another dimension into this. Gul is a protege of the Saudi royal family, whereas Erdogan shares the Qatari Emir's passion for the Muslim Brotherhood.

Evidently, Israel is terribly excited about the outcome of the turmoil in Turkey. The Ha'aretz newspaper has begun a "live blog" on the happenings. Equally, Tehran has counseled Erdogan to show "prudence", virtually waving the red flag, despite all the differences with him, that powerful forces could be arrayed against him.

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful

I S R A A & M A I R A J

[Shamim A Siddiqi, NY]
The issue of "Israa & Mairaj", Accession to Heaven of Rasulullah (S) that took place in the 12th year of his Prophethood must be put before the human society in its correct historical perspective. I have summarized it in brief in a sequence in order to evaluate its extreme significance and understand the onward march of Islam in the Arab lands and beyond.

1. Allah (SWT) when assigned Muhammad (S) his Mission to fulfill on earth in the very second Wahl [revelation] after "Fitrah" [the short period when the Wahi was stopped temporarily] as directed through Verse # 2 & 3 of Surah # 74, Al-Muddaththir towards the glorification of his (S) Lord through establishing His authority on His slaves and building the Islamic society of humans in that land:

"Arise and warn. And glorify the greatness of thy Sustainer"

Rasulullah (S) needed three things [a trio] to this effect.
  1. The Blue Print - the Guide lines - the Guidance as how to live, act and behave on earth;

  2. A dedicated and committed team of trustworthy workers and leaders [Da'ees] to implement the Plan or the Blue Print in the human society for establishing justice and peace on earth;

  3. Land where to establish that Plan or the Blue Print.
Now see the next 12 years of his (S) struggling for the attainment of his mission in the Makkan life:
* The Blue Print of the would be Islamic State was coming gradually in bits and pieces as the situation warranted directly from the Creator and the Sustainer to Muhammad (S) in the shape of the Qur'an;
* Rasulullah (S) himself undertook the task of building his (S) team of trustworthy workers/leadership in ones and twos through person to person contact with people around him in Makkah and in its vicinity.
* He (S) was constantly in search of land as where to build the HQ of his mission. He tried first in Ethiopia, and then he went to Taif for the same purpose but could not succeed due to obstinacy of the tribal chiefs. However, the ground in Madinah was prepared to this end when its people who came on Hajj, had a Baiyah on his hands and invited Rasulullah (S) to come to Madinah, he (S) readily accepted the invitation as he (S) was in search of it - a prelude to Hijra [migration] subsequently.
Now it was the most appropriate time in sequence when Allah (SWT) invited His Messenger Prophet Muhammad (S) to heavens through His special emissary the arch Angel Gabriel:
  1. To have a practical observation of His Kingdom - Heavens and Hell not directly from Makkah but through the special route via Jerusalem where he (S) was the Imam [the Leader who leads the prayers] of all the Prophets of Allah from Adam to Jesus [pbut] as Prophet Muhammad(S) was the last Prophet of Allah to mankind [not for Arabs only] and brought the most updated Guidance for humans to act, live and behave accordingly on earth in order to acquire the cherished balanced life of justice, peace and security on earth.

  2. To show him (S) the end-result of different crimes that people commit on earth in the from of similitude and the rewards that humans will get on the Day of Judgment for their good actions and deeds on earth;

  3. To hand him over the Manifesto of his (S) would-be Islamic State that he was going to establish in Arabian Peninsula with Madinah as its HQ. The salient features of that 14 points Manifesto are laid down by Allah in the Qur'an in Chapter 17 - Al-Israa from Verses # 23 to 39.
Any modern state that wants justice, peace and security to prevail within its geographical bounds can reap the harvest of its Barakah [blessings] if it establishes a state accordingly. The Islamic State established by Rasulullah (S) in Madinah and that of his four distinguished Caliphs in the vast tracts of Asia and Africa filled the earth with the aforesaid blessings. Man could not produce its replica since then.
I would request the Muslim leadership around the world to study the event of Israa or Mairaj and the Islamic Manifesto in detail. He will be convinced that this is the only way left for mankind to attain Justice, peace and security for the human abode today.
Muslims have to produce its model in 21 century. It is their obligation and they all are accountable to their Lord if they do not struggle hard for its accomplishment,
Fortunately, they have the Guidance totally intact in its most original form and abundance of land [57 Muslim dominated countries] but not the desired leadership to complete the "Trio" towards establishing the promised society that guarantees justice, peace and security to all its citizens, irrespective of cast, color. creed and status.
Will the Muslims not struggle for establishing this dream land and be the savior of mankind?
