Spotlight # 1: From Imam Badi Ali [Jamaat al-Muslimeen North Carolina]

Poverty is a serious problem in the Muslim world. This is not the poverty where one could live simply with dignity. This is grinding poverty created by oppression, exploitation and world wide looting. As a result large populations are now available to occupation armies to be bought and used against their own people.

Humble, Basic, Personal message, based on Sunnah, from Kaukab Siddique, ameer of Jamaat al-Muslimeen, to all Muslims:
The Qur'an 49:10
The Qur'an 61:4
O Global Ummah of Islam, we must unite to free Sis. Aafia Siddiqui. She is crying out in agony from an obscene trial in a Zionist court in New York. [See below.]
Remember Muhammad ibn Qasim who went from Damascus to India to fight a Hindu ruler who had abducted a Muslim woman? Where is our Ibn Qasim?

First breakthrough in case of 5 US Muslims: Both CAIR & ICNA were treacherous
Following Sis. Abigail's letter to the families of 5 US Muslims arrested in Pakistan, positive news are coming out. Special thanks go to Br. Khalid Khawaja, Pakistan's tireless human rights leader.

New Trend has managed to put the families of the boys in Virginia in touch with Br. Khawaja in Pakistan. We have learned that ICNA [the so-called Islamic Circle of North America] also played a treacherous role in the suffering of the youths. ICNA advised the parents to talk to CAIR which in turn reported to the FBI. After the arrests of the youths in Pakistan, ICNA completely lost interest in the suffering of the families.

Khalid Khwaja is facing serious difficulties owing to the US embassy's claim in Pakistan that the "privacy" of the youths will be violated if they talk to him.

Alhamdulillah the families in USA are waking up and have realized that their rights as citizens of this great country have been violated.

ICNA has been in bed with the FBI for many years, as its rep Naeem Baig admitted in a press release. CAIR is too shameless to know what it means to be a Muslim. ICNA is without GHAIRAT [sense of honor] while CAIR is without a trace of HAYA [shame]. Both are the curs of imperialism and kufr. [More later.]
[CAIR and ICNA are welcome to write to us. We'll publish their answers. New Trend is the only paper which gives right of reply even to curs like Nihad Awad and Naeem Baig.]

Latest News from Nigeria: January 19, 2010. The Nigerian army has carried out another massacre of unarmed Muslim protestors in the central Nigerian city of Jos. Nigeria is projecting the killings as Christian-Muslim violence. This story is incorrect. All the dead and injured are Muslims killed by the military which is armed by the US. [Revenge for the Dec.25 "bomber?"]

Haiti: Jamaat al-Muslimeen Part of the Struggle to Help the People
Large Haitian Community in Brooklyn involved in Relief Work

by Br. Abu Talib, Jamaat al-Muslimeen, Brooklyn, New York

I am glad to see that the New Trend did something on Haiti.
There is a big relief effort in Brooklyn where there is a large Haitian communty.
As Muslims we must be concerned for the people of Haiti at this time and what they are going through.
We have to see the larger picture in this: how for many years the United States and other western powers have held down the people of Haiti by backing dictator and military rulers to suppress the people.
At this present time United states military is occupying the country. The US military is running the country and decides who gets the aid and who can get into the country to give aid to the victims of this eathquake.
We must help the people there and the Jamaat al-Muslimee must support the people. May Allah help us in this effort.

Sis. Ashira Na'im, Secretary General of Jamaat al-Muslimeen, appealed to Muslims to help the people of Haiti. This is the address she has published for tax dedeductible donations:
Make your tax deductible donations payable to our sister agency Family Extended Educational Tide, and mail to P.O. Box 39732, Baltimore, MD 21212.
You will receive your receipt with tax number for your deduction.

Diane Rayme Shows she is great friend of Rushdie
The Diane Rayme Show featured Salman Rushdie on December 27. Evidently the program was a rebroadcast of a show originally aired in 2008. Despite the offense proffering copious air-time to an Islam-hater might cause many Muslims, Rayme re-aired the program twice, including on this occasion. Rushdie personally "graced" Rayme's recording studio for the original show. The show focuses on Rushdie's latest novel, "The Enchantress of Florence." Rushdie and Rayme share light banter, as might old friends.

The question remains, if Rayme was on vacation and needed to pull a show from her archives to broadcast in her absence, why did she chose a leading Islamophobe?

{ Editor's note: On January 21, 2010 Diane Rayme featured a discussion of the bombing by US drones of Pakistani villages near the Afghan border. Her discussants tried to sanitize the mass murder being perpetrated by the drones by referring to civilian deaths as "mistakes." She and others made wild allegations against the Pak Taliban with claims that they attack mosques, although the record shows US-backed troops and planes bombing Islamic schools, mosques and homes of Imams. Ms. Rayme is a more effective propagandist against Islam as compared to O'Reilly and Michelle Malking because Raymes tries to give the impression of being "measured" in her assault on Islam.] [Cindy Sheehan has been much more honest in her criticism of the reign of terror let loose on defenseless Pakistani villages by US drones.]
Obama Personally Orders Executions of Islamic Fighters
[One important bit of information which came out of the Rayme show on January 21 is that President Obama himself signs off on the executions of al-Qaida Islamic resistance leaders by the drones.]

Khutba in Baltimore: Please distribute widely
Haiti: Answering Pat Robertson
Racism and Zionism in the Guise of Christianity vs Islamic teachings on Suffering & Hereafter

On January 22, 2010 Dr. Kaukab Siddique gave the juma khutba at Masjid Jamaat al-Muslimeen in Baltimore. Very favorable responses have been received. Here are the main points:

Text # 1: To you [O Muhammad], We sent the Book in truth, confirming the Book that came before it and guarding it in safety...[The Qur'an 5:48]

Text # 2: The Home of the Hereafter we shall give to those who do not seek supremacy on earth nor spread corruption: The happy ending is awarded to those who are mindful, aware. [The Qur'an 28:83]
Text #3: ...They treat men's oppression as if it were the Wrath of Allah...[The Qur'an 29:10]

Outstanding Baltimore Artist Embraces Islam after Khutba and Prayers

On January 22, after Dr. Siddique's khutba and prayers, a distinguished African-American painter and artist embraced Islam. Known as El-j, short for Elijah, he is famous for his inspirational paintings. Sis. Cheikeisha El-Amin had urged him to come to the mosque and listen to the khutba. Finally he came to listen. Br. Azzam, the young new khateeb of masjid Jamaat al-Muslimeen, explained to him that this masjid is based on Qur'an and hadith and is not part of any cult or sect.

Br. El-j is a serious, mature, thoughtful person who had been searching for the truth for a very long time. He recited these words in English [followed by Arabic] as Dr. Siddique spoke them:

"I bear witness that there is no god but the One God ALLAH, the Creator of the universe, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah and the last of messengers and prophets."

The masjid resounded with TAKBEER, ALLAHU AKBAR.

My Children Were Tortured, This Trial is a Sham: 'Aafia
By Press TV

January 20, 2010 "Press TV" -- Pakistani citizen Aafia Siddiqui has told jurors at her trial that she was held in a secret prison in Afghanistan, her children were tortured, and the case against her is a sham.

On Tuesday, Siddiqui was thrown out of the New York courtroom where her triall is being held after shouting the remarks at the jurors.

The MIT-educated neuroscientist is currently on trial, facing charges of trying to kill US soldiers and FBI agents in Afghanistan in 2008 and connections with Al-Qaeda operatives.

She was ejected from her federal court trial after her second outburst, Bloomberg reported.

"Since I'll never get a chance to speak," she said in the courtroom. "If you were in a secret prison, or your children were tortured..."

She insisted that she knew nothing about a plan to carry out terrorist attacks on targets in New York, The New York Daily News reported.

"Give me a little credit, this is not a list of targets of New York," she said. "I was never planning to bomb it. You're lying."

Siddiqui vanished in Karachi, Pakistan with her three children on March 30, 2003. The next day it was reported in local newspapers that she had been taken into custody on terrorism charges.

US officials allege Aafia Siddiqui was seized on July 17, 2008 by Afghan security forces in Ghazni province and claim that documents, including formulas for explosives and chemical weapons, were found in her handbag.

They say that while she was being interrogated, she grabbed a US warrant officer's M-4 rifle and fired two shots at FBI agents and military personnel but missed and that the warrant officer then fired back, hitting her in the torso.

She was brought to the United States to face charges of attempted murder and assault. Siddiqui faces 20 years in prison if convicted.

However, human rights organizations have cast doubt on the accuracy of the US account of the event.

Many political activists believe she was Prisoner 650 of the US detention facility in Bagram, Afghanistan, where they say she was tortured for five years until one day US authorities announced that they had found her in Afghanistan.

Our America #3
A gentle but thorough critique of President Obama's first year.
by Sis. Karen English [Jamaat al-Muslimeen Los Angeles]
Economic Appointees: They're all Wall Street, fattened ex-bankers, servants of banking interests: On Haiti: Our "generosity" puts us behind Estonia.

Wednesday marked the one year anniversary of Barack Obama's presidency. He's made a bit of a shift since his "Yes we can!" days. I have heard from family and friends, "Give him time. There's only so much he can do." But people who went to the polls and voted for him (some for the first time) really believed that the historical magnitude of his election equaled different. Now his loyal supporters say, "Well, what can he do? This is probably an education for him. He probably never realized the limitations of elected office."

Oh really? Let's examine what he has done in this first year of office. Let's give him a report card of sorts divided into four sections: Promises; Appointments; Resignations; Image Rescue.
Promises:

Healthcare- We were supposed to get health care with a single payer or at least a public option. Obama emasculated the healthcare promise he presented during his campaign. This was done in collusion with the pharmaceutical and insurance lobbyists. The struggle he and the corporate democrats engaged in was pure theater. What's on the table now is a boon to the insurance companies. It locks in the power of the insurance companies even more solidly and there's no public option.

Transparency-There may be transparency on some fronts, but not when it comes to the abuse of detainees and alleged terrorists. When a British High Court said it was preparing to release secret US and British torture orders that the Bush Administration had ordered personnel to systematically abuse detainees, Barack threatened to cut off US intelligence ties to England. One can go to www.recovery.gov to see how stimulus funds were spent, generally, but we still don't know: how the banks are using TARP funds; to whom the bailed out banks are lending; the value of the assets that Treasury accumulated as a result of TARP; where the stimulus funds are ultimately going...

Lobbyists-Obama pledged no revolving door in the White House for lobbyists and special interest groups, yet his special envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, was chairman of the international law and lobbying firm DLA Piper until the end of 2008. The firm has a huge Middle East practice. Further, Tom Daschle was appointed Health and Human Services Secretary. But what of his work at Alston and Bird (a health care lobbying firm), as a paid advisor since leaving the Senate four years ago? And what about Mark Patterson---Treasury Department Chief of Staff? He was a registered lobbyist for investment banking giant Goldman Sachs until April 11, 2008. What of Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn, who was a registered lobbyist for a defense contractor? What of Leon Panetta, the Director of the CIA? He was the king of the Wall Street lobbyists. He's earned more than $700,000 in speaking and consulting fees since 2008, with some of the payments coming from troubled financial firms and from a firm that invests in contractors for federal national security agencies. He received $56,000 from Merrill Lynch & Co. for two speeches and $28,000 for a speech for Wachovia Corp. Other lobbyists serving in the Obama administration include Ron Kirk, U.S. Trade representative, and Cecilia Munoz, Director of Intergovernmental affairs at the white House.

Patriot Act- Bush's Patriot Act? Instead of getting rid of it the Obama administration supported renewing three provisions of the Patriot Act that were due to expire at the end of 2009. These are measures that make it easier for the government to spy within the United States.

NAFTA-During his campaign Obama asserted he never supported NAFTA. That was candidate Obama. NAFTA gave broad rights to investors and only paid lip service to the rights of labor and environmental protection. It's blamed for job loss and wage reduction, especially in manufacturing. He has yet to demand a renegotiation of NAFTA, though he promised he would.

Bill Study-As president he promised not to sign any nonemergency bill without giving the American public an opportunity to review and comment on the White House Web site for 5 days. On Obama's web site in November 2007 he promised to end the practice of writing legislation behind closed doors. He promised his administration would be so transparent that its deliberations would be shown on C-SPAN. (He had promised the health care debate would be televised on CSPAN.) Congress would be given up to 5 days to consider bills put before them. He promised as president that he would restore the American people's trust in their government by making government more open and transparent. He promised to work to reform congressional rules to require all legislative sessions, including committee mark-ups and conference committees, to be conducted in public. In February 2009, Congress passed the 1,073 page Stimulus Bill after having only 13 hours to read it and after just a few hours of debate. The people had no say in the matter though it was to cost the American taxpayer $787 billion dollars.

Guantanamo-He missed the goal of closing it by January 2010. On January 22, 2009 he signed an executive order to close the Guantanamo detention center, ban secret CIA prisons overseas, and bar CIA interrogators of detainees from using harsh techniques already banned for military questioners. The world is still waiting. On April 16 of 2009 Obama absolved CIA officers from prosecution for harsh, painful interrogation (in other words, torture) of suspected terrorists.

Iraq-He pledged to pull all U.S. forces out of Iraq by the end of 2010. He now touts a phased withdrawal that would leave 30,000-50,000 troops in Iraq through 2011 for the purpose of "training, equipping, and advising Iraqi Security Forces".

Appointments
The most bewildering of his appointments relate to his economic team. They're all Wall Street, fattened ex-bankers, servants of banking interests. Here's the list:

Timothy Geithner-Secretary of the Treasury. He was the head of the private (not federal despite its name) New York Federal Reserve.

Michael Froman-was a high ranking executive at Citigroup. He didn't resign from Citigroup until two months after he went to work for Obama.

Larry Summer-Director of the White House's National Economic Council. He has come under fire for his numerous financial ties to Wall Street. This top White House economic advisor received about $5.2 million over the past year in compensation from the hedge fund, D.E. Shaw, and also received hundreds of thousands of dollars in speaking fees from major financial institutions. In total, Larry Summers made a total of about 40 speaking appearances to financial sector firms and other places, with fees totaling about $2.77 million.

Lewis Alexander-Geithner's counselor is a former chief economist at Citigroup.

Diane Farrell- Appointed Deputy Director for the National Economic Council. She worked under Robert Rubin at Goldman Sachs. She once argued that sending jobs overseas might be "as beneficial to the U.S. as to the destination country."

Jason Furman-Appointed to the National Economic Council. He was a persistent advocate of free-trade agreements like NAFTA. He is the author of Walmart:A Progressive Success Story.

David Lipton-An appointee to the Economic and Security Council who worked for Robert Rubin at Citigroup.
Jacob Lew-formerly with Citigroup. Obama named him Deputy Director at the State Department to focus on international finance.

Gary Gensler-appointed to the Futures Trading Commission, which is supposed to be a regulating body. He is a former Goldman Sachs banker.

Resignations:
Some of Obama's most progressive appointees have "resigned" for this reason or that:

Greg Craig-was White House Counsel. His resignation was due, in large part, to the administration's dissatisfaction over his handling of Guantanamo policy. However, his departure might be the result of Obama's decision to delay the closing of the facility. Craig backed public disclosure on documents related to the Bush administration's use of torture against alleged terrorist detainees.

Phil Carter-was the top detainee affairs policy appointee at the Pentagon. He resigned for "personal and family reasons". He was an army captain who served in Iraq and was always an outspoken critic of the Bush administration's detention policy.

Van Jones-was the White House environmental advisor. He resigned in June 2009 after controversy erupted over his past activism. He had joined the administration in March of 2009 as special advisor for green jobs at the Council on Environmental Quality.

Inexplicable Decisions
Landmines-The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, State Department spokesman, Ian Kelly announced that the Obama administration would not sign the international landmine ban. The Bush era landmine policy would "remain in effect". The announcement came just days before more than 150 countries signed to ban landmines. This outraged the anti-landmine movement worldwide. Most of the victims of landmines are the rural poor---many of them children.

Rahm Emmanuel-It goes without saying.

Image Rescue
Haiti -To rescue some of his pre-election image, Obama has seized upon the opportunity presented by the tragedy in Haiti . He has pledged $100,000,000. Sounds good but as a percentage of The United States' Gross National Product, that amount is a rather meager amount (.0000069%). Our "generosity" puts us behind Estonia. We rank tenth in the list of nations contributing. We can only pray that aid doesn't end up in the pockets of corrupt individuals, foreign developers sniffing opportunity, and foreign contractors.

Bank Tax-In an effort to appear as outraged as the public over the obscene largesse being handed over to the bankers, Obama has proposed a bank tax. He claims that he plans to recoup every penny that has been given to them. However, the proposed taxes will apply to institutions with more than $50 billion in assets and would extract about $90 billion from them over a ten year period. This would only recover a drop in the bucket and Obama knows this. But he needs some populist sounding rhetoric along about now. More and more people are becoming disenchanted with him. His sliding poll numbers are not just reflecting the mess he inherited. The government handed over $700 billion to the banks. How is $90 billion every penny? Besides the government has given the bank future commitment to financial rescue which could cost the American people far more than $700 billion.
What has happened to:
"What Washington needs is adult supervision!"
"Change has come to America!"
"Yes we can!"

Repeated Attempts by US Drones to Kill Islamic Mehsud Leader Fail

On January 16, 2010 Hakimullah Mehsud, leader of the Pakistani Taliban in South Waziristan, sent out an audio message that US attempts to kill him failed. The US has repeatedly tried to kill this dynamic islamic leader. Hundreds of Muslims have been killed in these missile attacks by drones. Observers see it as cold blooded mass murder from the air against defenseless people.

One of the US attacks destroyed an Islamic school.

General Kayani Admits Failure: No Headway Possible in South Waziristan for another YEAR

January 20, 2010: General Athar Abbas, Shi'ite spokesman of General Kayani, announced that no chances of victory in South Waziristan are possible for another year.
A large Pakistani force entered the area but the Taliban evaded its thrust. Uzbek fighters and Arab commanders sacrificed themselves to permit the Pak Taliban to find secure areas in the forests and mountains.

Earlier, it appeared that Maulvi Fazlullah, the Lion of Swat, also evaded Kayani's onslaught and moved into an area of Afghanistan from where he is re-organizing the resistance. Fazlullah's mujahideen suffered big losses owing to inexperience in fighting a heavily armed modern military and airforce.
The lessons learned in Swat helped the Pak Taliban to survive in South Waziristan.
